In case anybody ever wanted an M5
Hey guys, dunno if this is appropriate or not - please delete/move/edit as seen fit. I know it's not about E90 but I do know that there are lots of E90 drivers that would love to/might rather get an M5 for the right price.
I had a friend that works in the car business call to tell me about an M5 that the store he works at took in. He knows I love BMW so he called me and gave me a heads up. It's a 2008 M5, seems pretty loaded, and it's a stick. Looks clean / low miles, clean carfax, good maintenance records. That's about all I know. Anyway they took it in for $25,650 and my buddy said he could probably get it for me at that price as is. He said if I wanted it to buy it, to do it before the shop gets their hands on it as reconditioning (oil change, wiper blades, fluid check, air filter, cabin filter, etc) will probably add at least $1,000 to the cost. I really wouldn't know what to do with an extra car - don't even have a parking spot for it but for $25,650 it seems like a great deal. Nada clean trade is $28,500 and retail is $31,350. Anyway, they have it listed for $28,982 (before it hits the shop). http://www.maxwellford.com/used/BMW/...6b186d88cc.htm |

that fact that it's stick and not smg.... Do it.
If you can afford it, and need a toy, do it.

After recently spending a lot of time in an M6... If you don't have a place to stretch this cars legs on regular occasion (100+) I don't know that the car would be all that enjoyable to actually own.
It's an autobahn missile, for sure, but outside of that arena it's not too much fun to drive in most any other situation. Just my opinion! The 6 spd would certainly spice things up, as the one I drove was a SMG coupe. |

That is my next car-E60 M5 with a manual gearbox. I need a bit more space with two baby girls. M5 all the way.

Be careful with the e60 m5's... I did tons of research on them as I really wanted one (still do) and they can be a maintenance nightmare... If the motor goes its roughly a $25,000 fix at the dealer (obviously there are cheaper routes, but even a used motor is close to $10,000). The rod bearing need replaced around 100k miles as they wear very quickly (expensive job), smg pumps go bad, clutch is stupid expensive, the list goes on... An engineering marvel to say the least, but if major components fail you are going to be up to your neck in repair bills. Needless to say, I still want one, but it won't be possible for a long time lol

I researched these E60 M5 beasts for a while and ended up getting an F10 M-Sport instead. There's a few crazy things that fail on these and none of them are cheap to fix. Rod bearings are the main one although I believe this is less of a problem on 2008 and above. There's also throttle actuators that fail and some high pressure oil pump/VANOS issues. If I had the money to blow and didn't mind getting worse fuel mileage than an F150 on the highway I'd go for one of these as a Sunday driver.
