There is a USB port under the arm rest, will this allow MP3's to be played directly from a USB stick or are the files transferred somewhere?

No idrive.

No HDD. Music via iPod, USB stick e.t.c.

OK thanks!...have a day off tomorrow, will have a play with formatting/albums/playlists etc!

Great that I don't have to buy an ipod et al but just using a USB memory stick will suffice.
