I picked ESS. I should have dynos for ya within two weeks.
I've been very pleased with customer support, car drives more smoothly than stock, and it was an absolute bargain... pretty hard deal to beat IMHO. If you want a custom tune, the LET might now be a bad option.

that would be great if you can post the dyno results. may I ask how much you spent on the ESS? why is LET a bad option? can you elaborate a bit further?
thanks! |

I have Dinan, I don't know much about the other flash options. I guess majority of people go with Dinan and pay the price because of the warranty, but I just wish Dinan offered a more aggressive tune. I jumped the gun and got the Dinan stage 2 before I had ever heard of other options like Vishnu and Juicebox. I'm a risk taker by nature so if I could do it all over again, I'd go with a piggy and put the balance towards additional mods like an LSD..
but the Dinan is a cool flash with moderate performance upgrade over stock and very smooth power delivery. I think that ultimately flash > piggy .. and Juicebox offers a custom map to increase performance if you don't care about the warranty anymore so you don't have to flash back to stock to get a piggy upgrade, which means in essence you can have the best of both worlds with the advantages of what a flash offers like speed limiter defeat, increased water pump flow etc. along with increased boost down low and up top to overcome the extreme boost taper control that the Dinan flash has on the top end |

thank you for the info dlbrooks18, I too think flash > piggy =)...but after much deliberation I have to agree with sd390r. Dinan simply cost too much along with the required oil and intercooler...
anyone has LET Flash review I can read up on? lol |

I am just wondering why you are going with a flash and not a piggyback? You will get more power with the Piggyback then the flash. If you are worried about warranty get the DINAN it is a good tune and you can just drive to your dealer if you have a problem. If you are not worried about the warranty I would get a JB3 if you do not want to get into the ECU and that is your reason for the flash I would get the new plug in JB+ that way you get most of the piggyback power but without the hassle of getting into the ECU. I have DINAN stage 2 and all the power adders except an intercooler and I just dyno'd without fans at 352 hp and 380 trq. If you buy a JB+ you would probably dyno higher with just the tune take it from someone that did not know of forums or piggybacks and only knew of DINAN from Motor Trend. Save you money and you will be happier with a piggyback of some sort and use the extra money on a intake and DP's.

I think the OP is not after which piggy back or flash makes the most hp or tq, but who can deliver some gain in hp and torque safely and smoothly. A flash tune is, "programmed to adjust ignition timing, fuel delivery, fuel metering, boost settings, rev limiters, and/or speed limiters to optimize performance and, in some applications, fuel economy." One added advantage of the LET Motorsports Flash Tune, it's all done through the OBDII port, without removing the cowling, e-box over, and DME connectors. And without having to send your DME to the flash facility and having your vehicle down for 2-3 days. Harold |

Not to mention with a flash the ECU/DME already knows what to do, it does not have to wait for instructions from the piggy, so its response time is much quicker.

Piggy = messing with ebox, wiring harness and crap...
ESS sounds good with great reviews, but mainly I do not want to pull my ECU out... So...I have decided to try out LET motorsport...fairly convenient for me since SB is a only a drive away... HP is willing to meet me @ dyno for a before and after, so I will keep u guys posted =) |

Hey guys, here is my update as promised...
Car : 2008 E92 Mod : none (except LET stage 1 flash) A little background of myself : Honestly, I'm not a mechanic. I'm just a guy with a 335 and a few hundred dollars in my pocket that wants to go faster without all the hassles, calculations, worries about messing up your car, etc... D Day: Harold agreed me to meet me half way @ a dyno facility. Plan was to run a dyno before and after the flash. With the dyno delays set aside, the whole flash process took ONE hour. 40 mins to read/scan your car, 5 mins delay for flash file being sent over via email, and 15 mins to flash your car. Harold simply plug his hand-held device to my ECU and that was it!! To me the whole process was pain free, and the results was "jaw-dropping." Very smooth acceleration was my first reaction, along with much more power. I felt as if the car was a lot lighter, and it also responds faster. Once again, sorry for the lame terminologies if they were not "technical" enough. Warranty issue is only a flash or 15 mins away in case your going back to dealer for any service. Conclusion: I am deeply satisfy with the LET flash, and also the service that Harold @ HP Autowerks provided. Would I recommend LET over ESS or other flashes or piggys? That I can not answer, because the deal did not go thru with them. But LET and Harold did set a very high standard for others to beat. =) I will have a follow up in a few days to let you guys know the MPG gain/loss. Thanks for the review OP. Any followup?
There is a local shop that does LET tunes in the Chicago area here, and I wanted to do some research. I saw they are offering a customized stage 2 and 3 flash as well. |
