Anyone else planning on keeping their 335i for the long haul?
It seems like on these boards a lot of people are already getting the itch to ditch their 335i they have had for only a few years for something else. I have put over 81,000 miles on my 335i since I picked her up in Munich in 2007, and I'm hoping to hold on to this one as a daily driver for at least 10 years and 200k+ miles. In fact, when it is no longer feasible to use as a daily driver, I will probably forego the few thousand I would get for it, and keep it as an HPDE car.
Yes, I had the wastegate rattle (fixed under warranty), and a couple of minor electrical problems, but all were fixed under warranty. Other than the wastegate rattle, I really could have fixed the other problems myself cheaply. I had the HPFP replaced under the recall, but never actually had any problems with it. Nice that BMW has extended its warranty to 120k miles....but really it can be replaced yourself for only a few hundred bucks even once the warranty runs out. I do not expect this car to be as reliable as my 4Runner I previously had. However, I'll be armed with a toolkit, Bavarian Technic diagnostic tool, Bentley service manual, and ready to tackle any problem that arises. It's amazing how much money you can save if you just learn a little about the car and do your own work. Just curious if there is anyone else out there with the same plans. I still grin from ear to ear every single time I get behind the wheel of this car....just as much as I originally picked it up at the Freimann delivery center, and spent a week with it in Germany. The practicality of this car is amazing considering the performance you get....just doesn't get better. I hope I'm the only one who will have ever owned it....

I plan on keeping mine for as long as I can. Currently it has just 25K miles on it and it is a 2008 model which is rather low mileage for it.
I am with you... Should it get less reliable, I'll probably gut it, sell the interior parts and use those funds to help convert it into HPDE car. Also, I am fairly confident that in a few years we will have affordable turbo upgrade kits. I can wait. As a side note: I am curious as to how our cars will age, both in terms of mechanical reliability and also design.

I'll probably keep mine a little bit after the warranty is out. So thats about a good 2-3 years. (I'll probably end up keeping it longer)

+1 I too do all my work and plan on holding on to mine for a long time to come. Haven't had the rattle yet but there's a DIY out there for that and just had the HPFP replaced when I bought the vehicle used back in April.
It really is an amazing car and a great joy to drive and work on... and woo the money saved so far. Mine is an '07 but I treat her like she just came new off the lot. Anyway I'm glad you posted this. Here's to all you guys (and gals) who can 'bring it' under the hood. |

Ok, so here is another point...
I also have a 2000 Audi A4 1.8tq for a winter beater/second car. I've been comparing maintenance parts between this 12-year old car and my 2008 335i. Guess what: for the most part, the AUDI parts are more expensive and often by a big big margin. I shop around online a lot and I know where to get the bottom dollar prices for each car. So I am not scared a single bit by the maintenance costs on these cars and neither should you!

Nice. OP, you should get a lot of use out of that car. I bought the 6 year maintenance warranty so I am inclined to keep it at least until I hit 100k which should not be too difficult, seeing as I put 19500 on it since new (17 months ago). At the current rate, I'll probably hit 85-90k miles on the odometer at 6 years. At that point, it will be a matter of where I'm at in life and what's out there. I love this car like the day I got it and it's still an immensely enjoyable car to drive. But it will age, and I will want something new.
I'm surprised at how few miles some of you can drive, and how some of you don't daily drive this car. |

Probably only for another 5 months or so. I usually don't keep cars past 5 years. I've been looking around for a smaller, much much lighter (weight) commuter.

In the same boat as you .. 07 335i Coupe.. no problems.. fuel pump changed but never failed in the first place.. only drive 8-10k/yr so will probably keep it as long as I can keep it faster than any new car under 70k.. and with all the mods available, that could be a while
I think the design is pretty timeless, specially compared to most domestic cars.. already like it better on the outside than the 2012 coming out.. biggest problem i could have is the turbos going, but thats just a good reason to upgrade them and if something should happen to rust (unlikely), you just replace it with carbon fiber.. With all the resources online like this forum, its not hard to do/fix/mod most anything yourself. With the huge amount of mods available, its just a fun car that you can keep reinventing.. If you get bored with it, you just change the front end, change the rims, add 25hp, swap out your leather or trim for something different, and its a new car again Can't affordably do that with many other cars out there..

Unless it turns into a lemon, I'm keeping it for a decade at least. Eventually, i want to take some pressure off of it miles wise with a workon second car (2002, or CS or else an e36M3 or ....)

My 335i will be in the family for many years to come. She's a keeper.

I bought my '07 about a year and a half ago and I plan on keeping it another 6 or 7 years at least, if not more. Unless I start making a lot more money, in which case I'd sell my 335 and buy an m3, I'll be keeping it for many years. I still love this car and I don't see that changing anytime soon

I've had my 335i for around 16 months, it has 44k miles on it. My CPO is up in 2.5 years, and at that time I will have around 75k miles.
I would like to keep it 2 additional years until I reach around 100k miles, but that will be determined based on my estimation in repairs during that period. If I expect costly repairs based on what I see done under my CPO it might be an early goodbye. Great car, still one more mod left for me to do. |

I'm in for the the long haul with mine. It's an '07 E90, currently at 90,000 km. I'll run it up over 200,000 km at least. So far the car has been almost completely trouble free, and I'm not worried about repairs I'll run into in higher miles. I'll make my money back on those by getting a long life out of the car much more than getting into a new car every few years.
