I got my ipod adapter cable from my dealer but when I picked up my car in Munich it came with this in the glove box... what is it for?

Looks like a 6" extension cable to me.

On the other hand, he may have just been rescued after fifteen or twenty years alone on a deserted island and is just finding out about USB.

I had that cable in my car at pickup in Munich as well. I thought it was an IPOD adaptor extention cable. What cable did you get from your dealer? Is there an actual adaptor cable that we are supposed to get from the dealer also?

The cable is for a USB flash device. Instead of leaving my IPOD in the car I just bought a 12gb USB drive and loaded all my songs to it. It cost about $90 and I figure its better then leaving my ipod in the car in 90 degree weather.

My car also had that cable with it when I got the car.
Don't know what I'd use it for, as my car also had the Ipod/USB Adapter cable in the box for use in the center console. That additional cable now sits in my trunk "just in case" I find a need for it. |

thanks for the info guys....and yes I know what a USB cable is.
Muddans which device did you get? Also does it work well with the i-drive? (plalists display etc etc? do you organize them info folder on the device?) Mnudel the cable I got from my dealer was the one that has an ipod connector on one side(the one that you plug into the ipod) and splits into two wires...one is a audio cable, the other the usb cable...both plug into inside the armrest and allow for ipod integration into your i-drive

Good Reason
There is a good reason for the cable. BMW doesn't want any type of mechanical load on the USB connector. If you use the cable to connect your USB device to the USB interface, the wear happens in the cable.

lateral mechanical force on something like a USB stick. It is easy to damage the USB connector.

OP - for the iPod, you'll need to buy the optional (in Europe) Y cable for it.
