Single/Triple Stage Induction
Can some one explain or direct me to a place that can explain the difference between the single and triple stage induction? Please don't spare the details.

This is best I can do on short notice. In a most basic sense the 3 stage system varies the length of the runners. |

Socom-You wouldn't happen to know how they change the legnth of the runners do you? The only 2 things I can think of are:
1) Using a sleeve system which may entail altering the position of the intake maifold either in part or the whole. 2) Using multiple hard pipes that are controled my a series of valves. Either of these methods would case major design challenges.

Search BMW Technology (I haven't). If I remembe correctly from their literature, they use what I could describe as a sleeve system. Apparently the 3-stage system is infintely variable and has been used in other BMW engines for some time. The I6 in my car (e46zhp) has a 2 stage "static" system (I believe).

From BMW tech website:
Fully-variable intake system (DIVA). Alongside the valve train system Valvetronic, BMW's eight-cylinder engines possess another innovation that ensures they can adjust perfectly to the driver's power requirements: the fully-variable intake system, DIVA. It adapts the length of the intake manifold using a coiled regulation mechanism. Long intake travel provides high torque at low engine speeds, short intake travel helps to develop high power at high speeds. I think this is for an earlier variable intake (like the one on the 7-series) but the concept is the same. |
