17" Wheel Fitment Question
Costco is running a deal on Velox wheels and I've been trying to downsize from 19s due to more travel on harsher roads (and avoiding expensive tires). I'm pretty dead set on 17s for comfort, price and the meaty look. The 17" Velox Apex is only offered in 17x7.5 et40. Will this fit my 08 e90 335xi? If they do fit, will they look goofy and/or require spacers? Once I get past that decision, I've been leaning towards 245/40/17 tires. Any input on this sizing would be great...
The other option for wheel size is 18x8 et35. I know for sure that these will fit but like I said before, I'm looking for more cushion so I don't have a panic attack every time I hit a pothole. PS I plan on installing lowering springs and shocks soon. Thanks! |

17x7.5 et40 is going to look really tucked (and terrible) from the fender edge.. also the tires for 7.5" will be tiny too. For reference my stock 8" wide front wheel takes a 225 tire, rear 8.5" is 255. Maybe you want to consider the 17x9 ET30 Apex Arc-8's with a 255 square setup?

If the only issue is offset, I could use 10mm spacers, right? |

You can do a 235/45/17 on the 7.5" but as the guy mentioned you'll need a huge spacer (>25mm) for it to look halfway decent.

that's going to look pretty bad on a 7.5", very bulged.. usually the recommended minimum width for a 245 is 8"

I've had 245 on a 8" and it's borderline buldging.

Try to find a 17x8.5 ET40 wheel for those 245/45/17.
Modern tires designed for low rolling resistance generally have soft sidewalls. The 7.5" wide rim won't support the sidewall at all and the steering response will feel like you are driving a boat. |

No.
With that tall of a setup, your tire is likely to hit the bottom spring perch on the strut w/ that ET. If you stick with 8.5" in width, go at least 30 or 35 on ET BEFORE having to add spacers. Also OP: how good of a sale are we talkin on those "Velox" wheels? Unless they're almost free, you're likely to find better quality wheels for not a lot more money. |

With normal road tires, I'm not convinced there will be a problem with the spring perch, but I admit I have not done it.
Probably around ET37 would be close to the ideal offset, but with stock camber the 245/45 tire will be close the fender and possibly rub at full steering lock. IMO the most logical solution is OE 17x8.0" ET34 wheels and 235/45/17 tires. That is what I have on my E90, and it is a safe trouble-free fitment. |

PS- logic is not a factor here. Last edited by SLBimmer; 07-20-2017 at 10:09 AM.. |

Sure spacers will improve the strut clearance. Eg a 3mm non hub-centric spacer could be a help if there is some rub on the strut during hard cornering.

Make sure you get a 17 x 8.5 or 9.
If you go 7.5" wide, you will really limit your size options big time. |

BMS makes a really great set. VRSF also makes a good set for a little cheaper. |

After you get the tires installed then: Measure the gap. See the DIY below on how to do this and determine which spacers are right for your set up. https://www.turnermotorsport.com/t-wheel-spacers I don't think 10mm spacers would be an issue for 245/45/17 tires up front, but I could be wrong. It's best to measure and know for sure. |
