Guys which oil should i use for my car? i had liqui moly 5w-40 before but now im thinking of going to 5w-30 or stay with 5w-40 but get the Shell Helix Ultra, what do you think?

I'm personally a fan of 0w-40 Mobil 1 Euro in my 335i since its tuned.

I think everyone will just tell you to go with an oil that is LL-01 certified and move on.

Officially it's 5w30 LL-01 FE but N54 enthusiasts say 5w40 LL-04.

but the liquimoly has great result on the TEOST test ( the oil cook test) witch is important on turbo cars.

this save us from having a turbo timer like the 90's on jdm cars


When you have a local dealer, it's not that expensive.

in example, on our local Napa store, the 5L of liqui moly is 110$ cad. It's insane !

A local shop supplier is 56$ cad.

And a local shop that only has liquimoly barrel and refill your jug, is around 50$ for 5L.

Well this is my case, since I dont have amsoil, ravenol nor motul here at a decent price.

Even the Rotella T6 is insanely expensive. But apparently one of the best for turbo cars.

I like 5w-40 and my N54 seems to really like the Motul X-Cess. There will be a ton of answers both way and neither are wrong.

Technically early owner's manual actually specify both 5w30 and 5w40. Both my 300i and 335i's owners smanual state you can use either one, and that "These oils can be used for driving at all outside temperatures"

mine is stage 2+ not crazy tuned

but if i were to buy should i get Mobil 1 0W‑40 FS? i live in uk it doesnt get that cold

cant find them locally but i had 5w-40 ll-01 in my car was that bad?

That's for you to decide. This has been working great for me and many others for years. If that doesn't align with you philosophically, don't run it.

Any modern synthetic in 5w-30 or 5w-40 will work just fine.

I just get the Mobil 1 0w40 FS European car formula since its easy to source from Walmart here and the Mann filter every time. I live in southern california and it NEVER gets below 45F here, therefore I don't really need a 0 weight oil, but I do like that in theory it should flow slightly better when cold. In reality it probably doesn't make that big of a difference depending on your weather.

Like others have said, just go with a good quality oil that is 5w30, 0w40, or 5w40 and don't worry too much about it.

Some brands that make an appearence here on the regular are(in no particular oil):

Mobil 1
Motul
Genuine BMW
Castrol euro
Liqui Moly
Ravenol
Pennzoil Platinum

Any of those should protect your engine just fine. I actually had to send my wife to the store to pickup oil for me once... she got the Valvoline Euro 5w40 formula... guess what, engine was still fine

I think the most important thing here is to not beat on your engine until it comes up to temp. I personally don't really get on it until engine oil temps are above 180F.

little tip, you have( or should have) an owners manual that you can gauge what weight oil is best for your needs, it tells you multiple weights, handy little book for other things too.

if you don't there are PDF files of the manual online to reference.

LL-01 is not needed it was an arbitrary certification for measuring the necessary suspension and detergents to maintain their 15K mile interval oil change standard ( that still ultimately ruined the engine by 150K if not sooner) if you change more frequently and at say half that interval almost any modern synthetic will work just fine. but i recommend 5K max on any syntehtic, 3K or less on any non synthetic dinosaurs depending on your driving habits. ( heavy racing every race end or 1K miles maximum for non synthetic) those are just my personal limits and may not apply to you.
