Takahiro Ueno to drift 2JZ-GTE swapped BMW 335i in D1GP
well since there isn't a professional motorsports forum here, this seems like the best forum to post this in b/c it is in a sense BMW news. i don't know what the source of the info is, but i found this over at Supraforums.com...
REDEFINING ELEGANCE: SAYING GOODBYE TO AN ICON The end of an era for a legendary drift machine? SAN DIEGO, CA. For over a decade, drifting fans worldwide have awed and groveled over a particular Drift Machine on the D1 circuit. The machine with red paint and gold wheels that graced racetracks all over the world will soon retire from the sport of drifting. Takahiro Ueno’s Vertex Soarer, will burn its last set of tires following the final round of the D1GP Japan October 2008. According to Pete Ulatan (Marketing Executive, Vertex USA), “It’s with great sadness to see an invaluable icon in the sport of drifting say goodbye. It will be indeed the end of an era and a beginning of a new one.” Vertex USA (www.vertex-usa.com) is proud to announce with the exit of the Vertex Soarer, Takahiro Ueno will continue drifting in a new platform set to turn the drifting world on its head. Dat Nguyen (Vertex USA President) states, “Takahiro will return to the circuit with a platform you will least expect. It will be a BMW 335i Coupe with a Toyota 2JZ-GTE Implant” Currently, Suivax/T&E Japan is diligently preparing Mr. Ueno’s new 335i for the 2009 season. “We can’t wait for the debut. It will expose T&E and the Vertex brand to a whole new demographic and bring freshness to the sport of drifting”, stated Ulatan. this is of course the car they'll be retiring/replacing: now i could care less about drifting, even the professional stuff. and i'm sure the bulk of the BMW community could care less as well. but it should be interesting to see if the 335i platform can deliver next season in the world's premier drift series, the D1GP. and moreover, we'll soon get the world's first 2JZ-swapped 335i. let the controversy begin ... /flame suit on...

The N54 on the other hand is still pretty new, with a lot of learning curve ahead for it. |

if the N54 were further along in its aftermarket development, and had already been proven reliable at the power levels we sometimes see in D1, then i'm sure the N54 might have been a consideration for Ueno and his team. i know its early in the game yet, as the N54 has only been around for a few years now, but patience is the key - we will without a doubt see great things from the N54 in due time...

from an overall weight and weight distribution point of view, i agree. the N54 weighs 429-lbs, whereas the 2JZ-GTE weighs 594-lbs. (165-lbs more than the N54). but just as Porsche has shown us time and time again, striving for 50/50 weight distribution is hardly the most important thing to consider when racing. and after seeing with my own eyes plenty of drifters whose weight distributions were quite different than 50/50 (many of which were front-heavy), i have confidence that this swap will at least make for a competitive car.

i found the N54 weight figure at Wikipedia, but since i take everything i read there with a grain of salt, I searched for some other sources (which was not easy). THIS web page claims the N54 is 190-kg, which actually converts to 418-lbs. however, other forums and internet sources seem to confirm the 429-lb. figure. the weight of the 2JZ-GTE i got from Supraforums.com.

Looks like Vertex will be making a drift 335i
http://www.vertex-usa.com/category/news-and-info
Interesting development in drifting. Ueno is well known for drifting his Soarer, otherwise known to us as the Lexus SC. I am not really surprised he is going for something different, but it seems that to make life easier they are swapping in the same type of motor that he used in the Soarer. The old soarer pic: The only reason this is relevant to any of us who own the 335i is that Vertex is a body kit manufacturer and will likely start releasing 335i kits. Just another option that should be available in the future. |

Screw the body kit. Whats more important is they plan on doing a 2JZ-GTE swap for the 335!

it appears that isn't the only reason that this is relevant to the 335i community. in addition to the bodykit, this is also big news for BMW owners who are drift enthusiasts, regardless of the fact that it won't retain the OEM powerplant - after all, it will still be the first e92 to compete for the D1GP title. and i must admit, i didn't expect to see so many positive reactions so soon - its clear that there are BMW enthusiasts here who also have plenty of interest in drift.

You may be right about that. I didn't expect the overwhelming positive feedback from fellow BMW owners. Usually I only see posts about body kits and stuff. I don't really feel the 2jz swap is anything to be excited about as it simply means that no development will go into the BMW motor from Vertex (not surprising since they are used to the Supra motor) The suspension aspects we will have to wait and see when more information becomes available about the car. If it is a BMW shell wearing japanese parts custom fitted then it is really not all that helpful to BMW owners IMO. None the less credit is due to Vertex for breaking the mold.

If you are going to swap out the engine, why not use a 320i then? Why would u get 335i and throw out the engine--i am assuming the brakes/transmission/steering rack/suspension will all be swapped out on a car like that so no reason to get the 335i?
am i missing something? |
