I have had many Porsches and now a 335i and through it all I have always had a jeep. I have one with 150k and another with 130k and combined I've spent maybe 5K in repairs. And Chrysler has never tried to screw me like I see BMW doing to it's customers.
Cheers

I think we've come a long way to make BMW believe that there is a problem. Though it is flattering to be one of "the most sensitive BMW drivers", IMHO, there are still three points left: 1. It took WAY too long for BMW to acknowledge the Lag(tm) and devise a fix. Sorry, Tyler. 2. We have yet to see how BMW handles wastegate rattle for pre-09/07 cars, should it occur. 3. This seems to be no good news for "the most sensitive" MSD81 owners. Sorry, Pavel. |

The BMW statement seems to be the least they think they can get away with, also you need the car to throw a code to get the software. They probably hope they can solve the biggest problems and quieten down the most vociferous voices. Possibly they are right but a lot will depend on whether the worst affected cars perform as they did originally. If your wastgates rattle or leak they'll say you need 29.2.....rather than fix the rattles.
With my July 08 build I can't help feeling there's something not quite right, especially with the difference in responsiveness between a cold and warm engine. Would 150ms make a difference to me? I suspect it would, one and a half tenths of second will make a difference but the time lapse between pressing the pedal and power ramping up is more like 500ms. BMW's statement is just the tip of the iceberg.

Man...you guys beat me to it (with Ezmaass's post...what is it with all these "ezxxxxx" guys being on the ball!? )
Anyway, I was just going to make a post releasing the hounds on this news from Satch. I wanted to hear it from his lips that it was ok to spread the word given that it will be his article in the next Roundel. Anyway, happy days, and lets keep those fingers and toes crossed that this is a real and good fix, not some BS halfass fix. |

Is 150 ms 1― second? I donīt think so. A millisecond is one million of a second.

BTW: Not all of us are sensitive... proof is here in the thread. Otherwise, BMW would not have thought they'd get away with that kind of "fix". |

My feeling is that our sensitivity to the delay is not linear. There's a delay caused by the electronics & adaptations in addition to the 150ms delay added by 29.2. It may just be that removing the 150ms delay suddenly makes the throttle response seem much more immediate. It could be that 350ms delay vs 500ms is an important difference for some. But....is the implication that cars built after March 08 do not have the 150ms delay? I'll need some convincing after BMW were so tardy coming up with the current statement.

Here's a review I found on a google news search for "335i turbo lag" - this one from South Africa:

"In an effort to address specific noise concerns, BMW updated the turbocharged engine software on 335i/xi and 535i/xi models built from June 2006 through March 2008. The updated software causes a small amount of increased “turbocharger lag” under certain circumstances and, while not substantial, the lag may be perceptible to the most sensitive BMW drivers. X6, 135i, and 3 Series/5 Series vehicles from March 2008 production onward are not affected. Release of the new software to restore the original turbocharger response is planned for January 2009, and it will be available for vehicles produced from September 2007 through March 2008 when they are brought to an authorized BMW center for a repair which requires a programming update. Clients with vehicles produced from June 2006 through September 2007 may request installation of the January 2009 software update. Clients who get this update should understand that there is a possibility of slightly increased engine noise levels under certain circumstances."
Hopeful. Hope it works. |

Don't get your hopes up
It's hard to get excited about this upcoming 'fix' considering that
1. Recent production cars (March 2008 to present) allegedly don't have the problem, yet I drove one and was quite laggy. 2. June 2006 to Sept 2007 production cars can get the update but might experience more engine noise? I guess this assumes that those cars had not been already updated to 29.2+, what BS. Plus if there's 'more engine noise', that implies that with this update, the waste gates are open at idle, not closed. F*** -Bill |
