My Wife does 450 motorway miles per week and currently gets 47-52mpg @ 65-85mph (M25) The car is brand new so would expect to see that rise with the milage.
A friend has the ED 120D and that seems to get the very similar MPG Fun in a different way to the bigger engine 1's and 3's |

I noticed no difference in economy from new until now, it dips a bit with cold weather which is normal. Steve

If you are looking for economical motoring, do not pair a diesel with an auto box. There can be easily 10% difference in mpg between auto and manual boxes with diesel engines. Petrol engines do not appear to suffer as much, maybe 1 or 2%.

I had a 116d that never returned better than 46mpg on a motorway run. I traded for a 2010 325d, M57 I may add and I went to Newquay full of holiday stuff at motorway speeds and easily achieved 58mpg. These new style 4 pots are no match for old school 6 pots.

My wife only gets 30mpg running around town, I get 28 in my 335d doing the same, I took it back to BMW to check and they said its normal for short journeys, so next time she can have a 330d

I had a 11 plate 320d auto courtesy car. Did ~180 miles on 1/4 of a tank. Got 55mpg easy driving it nicely, was down to 49 after driving it "normally" with some hilly A roads included and London driving.
Autoboxes will make very little difference to motorway consumption (you'll may even get better than manual due to longer higher gears). Around town the auto will hurt you though. If you are getting low MPG's, take the car out for a spin to get the engine warm and then drive it at 60 mph. If you are not breaking 50 mpg at that speed something is seriously wrong. I can even near 40 mpg on the 335i at those speeds. |

Diesels are poor when cold and take longer to warm up than Petrols. For short runs and low mileage diesels are kinda pointless. Once you hit the motorway though...

Poor fuel economy on older (3 year+) diesels is likely to be the EGR stat or the main thermostat not operating correctly. Common problem on the E46's and they cause the cars to never be fuelled as if they are warm, so over fuel and cause bad mpg. There's a way to check the temperatures I'm sure (http://e90.wetpaint.com/page/BC+hidd...us/revision/37) shows the current coolant temp. Would be interesting if a few people tried it and posted their results

i would love it if i was getting even 20mpg on avg. You guys are so lucky to have 318d/320d(s) in your country. Sometimes I just want a nice car that has good gas mileage vs. a super fast car.

Similar to above, I have disappointing fuel efficiency of my newly purchased 2009 318d. It is far from the advertised mpg of EU urban/extra-urban/comb.: 49.6 / 68.9 / 60.1 mpg (imp.), and is ~45.
I do ~20 miles to work per day, on A/B roads, and try to get into 6th gear as much as possible. On my own un-laden, have been taking extra care while driving to see if it improves, tyre pressures ok. I understand that I am not going to get the top efficiency out of it, but was expecting in the region of 55! Can anyone suggest what the issue(s) might be, or is this it at its best?? CAn it be mapped to improve? |

You cannot get the advertised numbers unless you drive everywhere at ~50mph on a flat road with no wind and never brake.
Considering your journey distance, if you averaged 60mph then you are only driving for 20 minutes. The engine will not be running at full efficiency until the second half of your journey. ~45 seems not too bad. The 320d is probably more fuel efficient than the 320d on A/B road journeys. |

OK thanks for that, but I assume you mean 320d more fuel efficient than the 318d on A/B road journeys? Strange considering the 318 is meant to be more efficient, I believe.
I just thought that I should be somewhere in the window, these are better here: http://www.fuelly.com/car/bmw/318d/2010 So, thats it, to conclude nothing can be done? |

45 mpg isn't bad. You'd probably get near 55mpg doing motorway miles with a warm engine. |

yeah, i do know that. Been to Euro and at first you are happy cuz you are filling up thinking it's the price of a gallon, then you realize it's liter.
But in general i rather have more efficient car than powerful car. That's cuz I am okay at Best driver. |
