The thing about Slash with GNR is that with superb technicians like Izzy Stradlin or Gilby Clarke and Duff on bass he was just the riff & lead and it didn't really stretch him (although there is some really cool stuff in there). You're right about some of his other stuff ... far more interesting guitar work (Anastasia, Back to the Moment, Messages off the top of my head).

Does anyone remember perhaps the two greatest session groups...
1. The Wrecking Crew - guitarists Tommy Tedesco and Carol Cain (sp?). They played on just about every record from the mid 60's to around the mid 70's...Hal Blain on drums of course. Phil Spector did all the arranging plus lots of other stuff at Gold Star in LA. 2. The Funk Brothers from Motown...esp. Jamie Jamison on bass. |

ABSOLUTELY!!!! And Carol Cain, Glen Campbell and Hal Blain...few people realize that they did virtually all back up instrumentals for all the mid 60's and 70's bands at Gold Star, Western, Capitol, and even Disney for about 10 years. Tommy even did the theme to Bonanza. Man, this is a walk down memory lane. |

Well, if someone's going to go Glen Campbell (who is very underrated), then there's a bunch of Southern rock guys: Hughie Thomasson, Al Collins, and the slide work of Gary Rossington.
But, for never getting his due and never getting recognized as one of the true greats: Randy Bachman! |

Look at 1:42 to 2:05 Most guitarists can't even play this because of physical hand size limitation. |

Jimi Hendrix is the answer here.
Every 10 years or so... A guitar player will emerge and really change what we know as a guitar music... Elvis, Chuck Berry, BB King, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Pete Townsend, David Gilmore, Billy Gibbons, Stevie Ray... When Jimi Hendrix came. He redefined what we knew as guitar driven music and still today, the style and work he created is unparalleled. Eddie Van Halen did something similar a few years later. Still Jimi Hendrix was miles ahead of anyone before and still today 40 years later. As someone who has played guitar my entire life... I still look at his playing in absolute awe. |

I remember walking into the old Yale Hotel in Vancouver to this wall of sound by this player sitting on a chair with his guitar across his lap. Took all of a minute to realize that we were enjoying greatness ... that was before the release of See the Light so he was pretty much unknown at that point.

Just saw him live and he's a monster. Played for 2.5 hours and just one song after the other. Unbelievable stamina, hand strength, and variety. Played slow, fast, high distortion, no distortion, slap guitar, country, heavy metal, and even threw in Disney songs.
