looks like those who didn't qualify for the retrofit can shell out $1100 to get it.
If your BMW Assist contract expired before December 31, 2016 you're not eligible for the no cost retrofit or compensation. However, BMW is now offering the upgrade COMBOX on a paid basis. This means you can pony up at the parts counter for the new parts, which have an MSRP of around $550. The box requires installation, programing which will run $350. Activation is another $199 putting your total cost at $1,100. That is a steep price to pay for the feature set, but if having the connected car features is a priority to you it can now be done. Background For GSM vehicles equipped with a 2nd generation (2G) GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) telematics device from the factory, the 2G GSM service will no longer be supported after December 31, 2016. Most of these vehicles were offered with BMW Assist Safety Plan and Convenience Plan, however, some 2014 Model Year and newer vehicles (e.g., E84 X1, E89 Z4, and E71 X6) were also offered with the new ConnectedDrive offering structure. Please refer to the table at the end of this message for a summary of which vehicles are equipped with 2G GSM telematics. |

I got mine upgraded. I have a 2012 F30 CPO I bought July'15. Lucky sod, the BMW Assist on it expires in Aug'18 so I opted to do the retrofit.
Knowing it costs $1100 just to do it, I chose that rather than $200 gift card. All I can report is that comms seem obviously faster. Sending destination messages to myself for the NBT Nav. is much quicker now than before. But that's the only difference I can tell. They had the car for 4 days thanks to an ice storm where I live, so I'm guessing it'd take overnight to normally do it. They said I was one of their first so they had to learn a few things and get additional cables and what not that they didn't have on hand. Last edited by pcwong325; 01-06-2017 at 02:38 PM.. My retrofit on the '13 E92 M3 was completed at the dealer prior to 12/31/2016 and it works fine. The wireless service is definitely faster than before the swap.

Does anyone have definitive information on what the new comm box is? Is this just a modified 2G box or something more on line with the comm boxes used in later models like NBT? The reason why I'm asking is because from the information I've heard you cannot use features like BMW Assist if you retrofit a newer head unit because they cannot communicate with telematics or something.

It's a 4G combox on a different network. I don't have details on the rest in terms of the Telematics.
The emergency features such as door unlock, theft recovery, SOS calls (automated and manual), and service requests work as do some other things. The above pertains only to BMW factory equipment with BMW performed retrofits. Last edited by shad0wfax; 01-06-2017 at 04:35 PM.. Reason: Clarified factory equipment only. |

I know they work on cars retrofitted by BMW, are you saying they work with aftermarket retrofits like the ones Bimmer-Tech provides (CIC -> NBT)?

CIC systems use an all-in-one unit which is external the navigation system. Basically, retrofitting an NBT will make you use your stock BMW Assist services. BimmerRetrofit has options for 3rd party services for things like ARTTI and Google Search, etc. |

Edit: I'm only subscribed to the safety plan and not the convenience plan. I doubt that any of the features in the convenience plan would appeal to me beyond what my smart phone can already do. That said, the updates are handled more quickly and browsing to the different features that require downloaded content to display (such as the convenience plan offer) is quicker than before. When my service gets closer to ending I'll spend the extra to go to the convenience plan for a month and see if it's any good for my area. Last edited by shad0wfax; 01-08-2017 at 02:36 AM.. I opted for the cancellation of the service. Did that in November no gift card yet.
Has anyone who opted for the gift card gotten theirs yet? Thanks |

Haven't gotten mine.. it's been well over 12 weeks. I emailed BMW Executive Customer service, they called me back twice and told me I would have it in 10-12 days. Really disappointed in this promotion.

Did you take the car in to have the service disabled and still haven't gotten the card? Or just made the selection of cancelling? Stinks that even if you want it turned off, you still have to take the car in for them to go in and mess with the car to officially "disable" the equipment.

Replacement of combox
What is actually involved in the replacement of the box? I know they have to reprogram etc but what is involved in the actual physical replacement of the box? For example where is it located? I have a 2014 X1 without navigation.

If you chose the 3rd and still have active subscription from the old combox, they will carry the remaining on the new combox. You will only start paying for subs once the original runs out on your new combox.
