ELV Blocked
Happened a few days, just noting another occurance of this crap!
Took about 2 minutes of moving the steering wheel and pushing the ignition button.

Have you got CIP 19.1 or newer software ?
CIP 19.1 was supposed to have a software fix for this error

I think I'm running 19. My car was built first week in September. Which version was this?

When mine "jammed" it wasn't locked - i could turn the wheel - just not start the car. My luck though - I called BMW Oncall (Roadside), spoke to the call center lady - who went to call a mechanic (and wake him up) and as she put me through, it unjamed - the car started...and I said- Thanks! I got it working... ahhh. Hasn't happened since though. How many times/How often has it happened to you? |

It has something to do with the cast you put the key in or something like that. Just go have software updated. Mine was built in November and I had that problem. Honestly it's ok, just turn the car off, 2 minutes later it turns back on. I scanned my service sheet thingy from the dealership, if that helps you any. You could print it off and show it to your service adviser that tells what they did.

I doubt anyone will be calling you....unless its to check up on your service experience....
Its really not a big deal, took two minutes, but at same time, when you pay upwards of 46K, you expect it to work.

I saw this thread when it was first posted, but just had a similar experience last night. I parked my car while travelling in reverse with the steering wheel torqued aggressively to one side, then stopped the engine. When I later tried to restart the engine, I got that ELV blocked message. Knowing exactly what this stood for (since I looked up the abbreviation earlier), I turned my steering wheel, which by the way was not mechanically locked, in both directions with no resolution of this problem on several attempts. I then walked out of my car, locked it with my CA from the outside, unlocked it, then successfully started it. Maybe this was a coincidence, maybe not, but it seems like locking and unlocking the vehicle resets the error screen--sort of like pressing shut down and restart on Windows XP.

Yea, its a strange quirk but it doesnt completely stop the car from working.

Updating thread in case someone else finds the bug...
It happened to me for the first time today. The engine wouldn't start and I got an iDrive message that was similar to the one above except it said "ELV Malfunction" with slightly different text below about an "electronic steering wheel lock." I had the same in-dash display: a small lock on top of a steering wheel icon. The car is a November 05 build. And the steering wheel wouldn't move. Not comfort access. Parked in an asphalt lot where I've parked 100 times before. I called BMW Assist and after they looked up the code, they said it had to be "transported to a dealer". While waiting for the tow truck, I decided to try again and this time it started with no sign of the error. After I got home and ran here to see what I could learn, I saw the thread about the service update.... http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...t=elv+steering ... it indicates this fault will re-set after 16 minutes. Thinking back to when it happened to me, I probably had waited about 16 minutes from the time of the first start attempt until I got it running. Odd that BMW Assist knows so little about this, considering that it was in the service bulletin. Too bad they don't visit here -- this is the only place on the net I could find any info about it.

My steering wheel locks like that 3 time recently. I have no CA. I have no clue what I did to cause that and how come it was a recent event and I had the car for 1 year now.

Interesting this thread came back up. It happened to me last weekend.
Knowing what the problem was, I yanked (hard) on the steering wheel while repeatedly pushing the start button. It worked on my 3rd try :-) |

Odd that this thread came up again today - it happened to me about an hour ago for the first time! It took a few minutes of playing with the steering wheel to get the car started.
This is totally unacceptable for a car of this caliber. I hope BMW is monitoring this thread since a lot of us are having the issue. |

The ELV Malfunction happened to me today too after I pulled away from a declined parking spot. I took it into the dealership (in Germany) and after turning it off and back on again, the steering wheel did not move at all. Their initial reaction was confusion, so I got a 5-Series rental while they checked it out.
They called me back shortly afterwards to say that I can pick up my car because it works now. When I asked them what the problem was, they said there was no problem and they didn't do anything to fix it. That was as much explanation as I got because they barely spoke English. Glad I found this thread because the dealership wasn't much help, except for washing my car. |

No recurrence for me after 1K miles.
I used BMW Assist when I had my ELV incident - and as I relate above, they were going to have me towed but it came back on after 15 minutes (as described in the technical service bulletins I found through the links above). BMW Assist sent me an email a week later asking my impressions of the service -- I let them know that I thought they are pretty useless if their technicians have less information than I could find on the Interent in 2 minutes of looking.

I had this exact same issue about a month ago. Never had it before, and had the car over 6 months now. It was parked in a car park, nothing unusual, not on an incline and wheels facing straight ahead.
Took me about 10 minutes of yanking on the wheel and pressing the start button to get it going. I was getting tense in the end because (as usual) I was running late for a date, and the prospect of calling and waiting for BMW service didn't impress me much. Hasn't happened again since, touch wood...
