Gears grinding when clutch fully disengaged?
About a month ago my friend told me that a couple of times he grinded his gears when shifting from 1st to 2nd. I laughed at him and told him that he couldn't drive for shit. Well it happened to me twice in the past 2 weeks. I pressed the clutch pedal all the way for sure. First time was normal driving and the second time was WOT on a slight bend (if that makes a difference). Both times it was from 1st to 2nd gear. I'm by no means an MT noob, but im not the stig either lol. Has this happened to anyone else?
Edit: I have not altered the CDV |

TADTS. 1st to 2nd grind, especially at WOT, is not unusual on our cars. Get used to slipping it into gear a bit easier, rather than jamming it in.

Yes it happened to me twice also. I'm more careful now with my shifts but I've been driving MT for 15 yrs, I'm no noob either. I'm going to have my transmission oil changed in mine during the next couple of weeks because I have notchy shifting and the transmission shifting just doesn't feel right to me. My E90 has 86,000 kms on it now. Runs 100% aside from the manual tranny bugs. |

i have an e92 328xi and this has never happened to me...although once when shifting quickly i pulled the shift boot and knob off , it could be that the syncros cant keep up with the fast change and the gears grind for a little , i have a friend with an rsx and that happens all the time with his car going from 1st to 2nd i know theres no relation but im just sayin haha

I've posted a separate thread on this recently, but here it is again.
If you notice the clutch getting heavier, or the shift quality deteriorating (especially in first gear pulling away) your flywheel and clutch may be faulty. I had all the above. On investigation, the dealer found the dual mass flywheel had 'faulty parts'. This in turn had fried the clutch. After they were replaced, no more embarrassment at the lights... For in formation, the dual mass flywheel has sprung weights that move out as the revs increase, thus increasing the mass of the flywheel. At low revs you want low mass to allow the engine to rev quicker and take out inertia. If the weights stick out, the clutch needs to work harder to overcome the inertia in the drive line.
