Aftermarket Radio
UPDATE WITH PICS!!!!
NEED HELP!!!!!!!!!! I bought an aftermarket radio and went to go get it installed. I talked to an Installer and he said he couldn't do it because, the radio was connected to the Dash/speedometer. If I removed the factory radio, I will lose my Climate, Miles, Service, Time, and just about everything on the speedometer. Is this true? I've tried searching and PM'd a few people no reply. Really need some input or help. Thanks. I have a 2007 E92 328i (don't think I have logic 7) Last edited by DJ.E92; 03-24-2010 at 08:05 PM.. |

Its hard to add aftermarket heads
All the major European Cars have multiple computer buses and the one that that operates most of the Entertainment is called the Most Bus . This is a Fiberoptic Bus that connects Bluetooth, Cd player, navigation , Sirius and Hd Radio modules and displays that car computer info about mileage outside temperature, mpg ,etc on your HU display. Its hard, and expensive to fit aftermarket stereo and electronics as a result. There are many examples of aftermarket mods in the http://www.e90post.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=27
section. Also when you add something to the existing Head Unit such as Ipod Interface or CD player you have to have the car reprogrammed to recognize the new device if it is attached to the Head Unit. Some people get one of the larger Double Din Decks which have all the functions on it which makes interfacing easier. You have to be really careful to and do a lot of homework before adding anything. You also need to find a shop that is familiar with this car and are competent to work on it. If you go into a shop and they don't understand the Most bus or work on BMW's run away fast. Also this info would only be lost to the Head Unit I think. Last edited by ctuna; 03-13-2010 at 11:17 AM.. |

What did you want to accomplish with the New HU
Where you looking for better sound or more features . You also have to be aware what is in the the Premium Stereo which is the Base model in 08 .
It has an AMP in the trunk. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...t=52193&page=2 read this thread. |

I'm not planning on replacing the amp/speakers. However I do have an amp in the trunk. I heard replacing the HU will effect this. But Car audio shops said no. =/
I have an hour before the installer gets to me, so im going ahead and get it. If things don't work out... BACK TO FACTORY! New HU will be up for grabs =) |

Why would anyone want to replace the radio? It provides all of the functionality that any aftermarket unit can provide.

Because he wants to lose his warranty for all electrical and computer components, I suppose.

Reasons for replacing Head Unit
After market Head units come with all the features that cost you and arm and a leg to integrate with or are impossible to integrate with the factory unit. They will look pretty ugly though if not done nicely .
Its around 500bucks or more for a most ipod integration or 1k for cd changer versus about 750 for a head unit that already has this stuff built into it. Reasons not to it looks bad and and the existing unit is so deeply integrated with the car electronics results will be unknown. Not many people are qualified to make the change . Warranty issues, car programming issues It would be nice to know exactly what you are installing give us pictures and let us know how it turns out. Last edited by ctuna; 03-13-2010 at 01:29 PM.. |

Another thing you should know
The outputs from the existing head unit are differential or balanced signals (assuming non logic 7)
and the existing amp will want to see that so the head unit you are putting in better be capable of the that or you will need away to convert the signals to that format. If you have logic 7 then you have a fiberoptic connection between the head an amp. Changing the Head Unit seems kind of scary . Some people go as far as mounting there existing head unit in the trunk so it won't screw with the car electronics. I would like to know myself how the Most Bus Works exactly . Is the OEM Head Unit the Server/Master for this Bus or are the devices attached to it in a ring with equal priority, If there is a Master/Server Unit for the Bus where is it? |

Got the head unit installed... So far I like, beside some minor adjustments. As far as losing SOS the error does get annoying, but there is a easy way to bypass it will be done on tuesday. As for warranty, BMW still covers EVERYTHING! spoke to them over the phone and took it in for no reason. Every1 at the dealer loved it. I wanted Navi/DVD and now I have it so I'm good. By tuesday I'll have SOS back as well as my PDC and I'll be one happy camper!

Someone on here sells a harness so you can relocate your OEM HU and maintain all its features while having an aftermarket HU installed. You should check this out. Sounds like what you're looking for.

I'd like to see photos also. I was going to jump through these hoops a month or so ago but decided against it due to Logic7.
Pay no mind to the naysayers and the like; it's your car and you can do with it what you please. If you want a Bozo the Clown face on your steering wheel staring back at you and want to cover your seats in spineless Opuntia Prickly Pear Cactus, then more power to you.
