Given it probably costs >£100 for HDD update at a dealer - I'm not surprised.
Given you can buy upto date full euro mapping INCLUDING sav nav software for an iphone for around £50, they need to make it cheaper - its probably an untapped stream of income. For £30 say, I'd probably get an update (if I had an HDD car) - it should only be a case of plugging in something and leaving it for 20mins or so. I am surprised some has not come up with a way around it yet though - bit like the bootleg DVDs for earlier cars with scameras on etc. |

Yes they certainly can do it, I had mine done last week.
I got my HDD Nav updated from the original 2008-2 maps (even though mine is a June 2009 car) to the 2010-1 maps. They charged me £170 which I believe is just the cost of the new maps as a BMW part. They gave me the package afterwards, there are 2 DVDs in there which they must have used to update the HDD. Impressed with the new maps too, they are bang up to date with some recently modified roads in my area, much better than my old TomTom where it used to take years for new roads to appear sometimes. |

Chris, would you be willing to see of the discs could be re-used to update other vehicles - I reckon there would be a few of us willing to split the costs if it would work?
I would 'like' mine updated as I also have a 2009 car with 2008 maps on, but it is not worth £170 to do it. |

Glad you like it, but I just can't get my head round £170 being VFM.
It would be interesting to know how many people bother - I certainly would NEVER do it at £170 and I suspect I'm not alone. It would be interesting to know kit the DVDs go into, and whether someone is working on a laptop app with cable that allows people to update HDD cars at a lower cost - obviously this may require some creativity when it comes to getting the raw map data. |

Yeah £170 is a lot I agree but I will probably do it every 2 years, so for £85/year I will have an up to date sat nav all the time. I can live with that. I used to spend more than that on TomTom's over a 3 year period as you have to buy new hardware when it either breaks or you want the new model............
I do 30k miles/year often to new places so a SatNav is pretty essential tool for me. |

They mentioned to me in the dealership it can't be used in another car, I have to keep the discs as a backup in case the HDD fails in my car, they would need the discs to put the new maps on, but only the dealership can do it. |

HDD Update
Coo...£170 seems stiff when you paid so much for the car in the 1st place! Would be happy to share the cost just to borrow the disks + instructions/kit to upload MP

The discs are useless without the code which is separate and unique. There is another thread on this. I agree - the cost is too much. I'm sure on the 'less is more' principle, if it was say £60, far more people would get the update done with a service visit.
