Accessory Drive Belt (How often/when)?
Is that true that you must replace the accessory drive belt every 4 years or so even though there is no sign or wear and tear?
Is there any interval mileage guidance as when to replace? Thank You |

I did mine at 75,000 miles when it was about 3.5 years old. The old belt looked fine and probably was good for another 75,000 miles. I've kept it as a backup. The belt is inexpensive and very easy to replace. If you do it as a DIY it's cheap insurance.

Invest in a bentley manual, $90 is well worth it or wait 2 years when I replace mine.

Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. I looked at the belt drive for the 335i on realOEM and it looks like the N54 tensioner pulley is a similar design to the N52 in the 325i. The post Chriztofor put up should work. So you need a No. 60 Torx socket and a decent size breaker bar. You fit the socket in the hole on the tensioner pulley arm and then release the tension on the belt by pushing or pulling on the breaker bar. Slip the old belt off, then SLOWLY release the tensioner back to its tension position. Get the new belt lined up correctly on all the pulleys except one you can easily reach, then release the tension again, slip the belt over the last pulley, then slowly re-tension the belt by releasing the tensioner back to its tension position. Remove your tools and start the engine to check for proper alignment of the belt.

Take a look at this video, it is for an e46, but instead of using the torx, see if you can use a socket. If e90 kept the same basic design you can use either torx or socket. Socket is safer.
