Phone on a plane - No POTD!
On a flight home, the girlfriend nagged the hell out of me for not turning my phone off before taking off rather than just putting it into airplane mode. What's the consensus?

John, isn't this some type of creativity infringement? I think you should weigh in here. Radix too....

aren't you supposed to turn it off during takeoffs and landings (e.g. airplane mode isn't enough)?

I've heard both but during my last flight, the flight attendant told the guy next to my girlfriend to put his phone into airplane mode for takeoff. I gloated of course.

I just turn mine off since it's not a smart phone or anything, so all it's doing is draining the battery by being on. And yes, during take off and landing everything is *supposed* to be off.

I read something about this, something like airplane mode is for emails because they dont put the plane in danger, just texts and calls...idk I might be wrong

None of it puts the plane in danger...I've made calls upon descent to my ride and people have made calls to me when I was theirs...so far no planes have crashed

Even if you call someone during the flight your service is still going to suck, whether the airline bans it or not. There have been instances where the plane's GPS signal was fucked up because a lady was calling her ride how she was going to be late because they were in a holding pattern for 20 minutes. They just don't want to take chances. You don't know how hard it is to land a plane in dense fog with all your computers on the fritz.

not true. it would take a open microwave right next to the radio stack to really cause interference. you can hear the cell phone, like you would next to computer speakers, but it won't cause any deviation in the indication on the OBS or ADF, which are the primary radio navaids. mainly, it's a safety thing. they want you paying attention during the critical parts of the flight - takeoff and approach to landing.
when i used to fly, i had a device called the safetycell. it let me chat away at low altitudes over the headset. there are some airlines that have devices that allow the use of GSM cell phones onboard. i know select emirates airlines planes have these devices. not sure what the cost is, but i'm sure it's similar to gogo inflight internet, but that's a wild guess. |

I also remember hearing that it's an FCC thing in that being at such a high altitude your phone will "ping" too many cell towers at the same time. I've also used my cell phone when flying a private plane with no issues. Didn't mess up my navigation at all.

we just advise passengers to do it because during take-off and landing, we call it the devils 11 minutes, alot can happen within those minutes, so we need you to be fully aware of your surroundings as much as possible. Thousands of passengers videotape tape take offs and landings or are on their ipod and it does not effect the aircraft at all. Its just our little lie to ensure that your phone wont end up wedged inside your ass if we crash.
