I tried that. Seems to keep playing music while she is talking can barely hear her. I had to basically turn the volume off to hear her over the music.

Go to the sound options in the Menu. There should be an option for the voice guidance, among other things.
Also, like the previous poster said, you can increase the volume while the voice is talking. You can force it to talk by turning the voice off and then on using the left hand menu in the map display. (I believe it's the 2nd icon from the top). Edit: looks like it's not an option in the menu. You're gonna have to adjust it while the voice is talking as described above.
