General 335i Questions
I'm new to this forum, although I've been lurking for a while. I'm planning to buy a used '07 or '08 335i at the end of this semester (mid-May), jet black, manual. I'm gonna have a good amount of money left to spend on some mods I've been looking at: Lux H8, Bastuck quad exhaust, rims, tires, intake, body work, etc. Later on, I plan on installing JB4, but I don't wanna put anything in my car before knowing how it works and what exactly it does (JB4 and other ECU mods seem so complex so it might take a while to understand them). Based on this, would I be better off purchasing a CPO (most likely more miles, older) or a used (less miles, newer at same price) 335i? Also, since I'm just learning about the JB4 and other piggybacks, does it matter when I purchase and install it? Are there any advantages in installing it stock vs. installing it after a good amount of mods? Thanks in advance for any help!

Its generally better to install the tune first. The gains from the intake and exhaust wont be as big as they would if a tune were installed. The JB4 will adapt to the intake and exhaust and will allow for them to be more efficient. As far as the exhaust goes, I would recommend simply doing downpipes instead of a full exhaust. Its 80-90% of the power and about a third of the cost.

Welcome to the forum! I've had my account for years and have lurked all that time, but only recently made the plunge and decided to start posting. So far, so good.

i would go for the one with the most warranty over actual miles. also new warranty > cpo warranty. theres a bunch of stickies on the top of the forum that explain most of the tunes. good luck.

Thanks for the replies.
The main difference I've picked up on from the stickies and the arguments is that the two competing piggybacks are similar. However, the JB4 is cheaper and the V5 controls some kind of timing better. What I was planning to do was to get the car and shortly afterward install: aFe DCI, Bastuck or similar quad exhaust w/ 2nd cat delete, and body work. Then, after a bit of getting used to the turbos, get a tune and FMIC. I would really like to know whether it makes a difference if I tune it before putting in exhaust/intake or after exhaust/intake. |

tune first for sure, if you choose exhaust or just even the dp then you'll have an SES light stare you in the face every time you start the car. Tunes delete these stupid codes as well as make your car run better. The main idea is to have a tune that can adapt as you add mods afterwards. The stock computer will not do very much to adapt for your increased airflow or reduced backpressure etc.

Thanks for all the input. A few more questions:
1. V5 enthusiast vs. tuner --- huge difference in features or not really? 2. Has a general consensus been reached about V5 vs. JB4? I don't mean to start another war, but have any conclusions been reached as to which one does what better and which one gives more gains, etc.? 3. Any other input on CPO vs. used?? Either way, I would have to make sure the dealer is fine with an exhaust and intake (since tune can be uninstalled relatively easily). Can anyone make the whole warranty/maintenance situation a little clearer? Appreciate it. |

As long as the car you are buying is under 50K miles you should still have the factory warranty (as long as it wasn't voided in the past).
As for mods go and best bang for the buck: #1 tires #2 tune (research before buying/installing) #3 meth #4 intake $2,000 or less for all of the above and you should net an additional 100hp and better traction than stock runflats. If you are more serious about modding down the road when you have more $ go for LSD, upgraded turbos, downpipes, FMIC.

I had a BMW Performance exhaust installed first, then a month or so later put in a JB3 and DCI at the same time. I had my dealer install the exhaust, but have found out that my dealer is OK with mods. Recently took my E92 in for a HPFP recall without removing anything, and had no problems. Even sat down with one of the SA's and discussed LSD and intercooler options.

Thanks for the response. I guess it just depends on the dealer whether or not I can keep the warranty while modding.
This might be dumb, but is it just me or do the tail lights look different in these cars? The left ones look wider and bulkier and the right ones look thinner. Am I just seeing things? |

The mods listed above should net you roughly 100 hp or more depending on gas, atmospheric conditions, your engine, ect...
