diagnosing N54 with DIS
Hey guys, anyone here who played around with N54 using DIS?
I was doing it yesterday just to satisfy my interest. On the idle rmps pressure before throttle valve is 97 kPa and after is 280 pPa. (13.5 psi and 3.9 psi respectively) I found out that pressure before throttle with pedal to floor is 156 kPa (which is ~ 13.5 + 8.3 psi atmospheric pressure + turbo). And it seems to be fine as stock pressure is about 8 psi as far as I know. But if I look on the pressure value after the throttle it always gets till 1200 pPa sharp (which is 16.8 psi) and stays there till the end of acceleration. It's less than it should be in total and it's more then it should be if I compare difference between idle rpm and full throttle. It looks a bit strange as turbo pressure is changing a bit in time, but this one stays still. I assume that this is some kind of wrong data interpretation in DIS, but can anyone confirm this? |

Atmospheric pressure at sea level is about 14.7psi = 1 bar = 100 kPa, so at idle you are reading 97kPa, just a tad bit less than atmospheric pressure at sea level.
The pressure sensor inside the manifold tops out at about 4psi. It is not designed to read actual manifold pressure. You are reading everything normally.

Thank you! Now it's clear. So I can assume that turbos are producing designed pressure?
Yeah, I'm a bit higher than sea level, so I think it's normal that it shows 97 kPa |

What hardware are you using to run DIS?

Interesting. I have a DIS running on a VMWARE image, but for some reason it refuses to connect to the car. I've not messed with it too much though... I'd love to get DIS running on my laptop though.

Was it ever working with any other car? Or you just gave it a try and that's all?

Yeah, it was a ready made VMWARE image posted by a user on another forum. I only gave it a quick try without much effort... I guess I need to spend some time fiddling with it.

I was using DIS on my e46, so it's been a while, but I dont think using someone else's image would work. Well, the image might, but there are settings in VMware that would be specific to your computer. I forget the terminology, but there are some settings that allow the VMware to pass through the usb port to allow communication with the vehicle.

What you need to configure is static ip address of your vmware network card. You can do it in your win control panel network settings.
You will also need diag-head emulator, to make dis beleive that d-can is bmw diagnostic head. |
