sketchy oil change

Took my 335i in to the dealer for a free annual oil change on Saturday. They ended up also doing a brake line flush. An hour and a half later my car is ready. I start it up and my oil temperature is at normal operating temperature of 230 deg F. If they drained my old oil, and added 7 quartz of room temperature oil, is it normal for the new oil to be so hot? I'm concerned they might not have done the oil change. Any thoughts?

Could it be that they took your car out to test the brakes after the fluid change, and got it up to operating temp?

That's one idea. Maybe the invoice will show miles in/miles out... I'll check when I get home. Anyone else have any experience with this?

What model/year do you have that has a dipstick?

If I was in doubt and only had an e-dipstick I would pull the oil filter.

+1

just take out the oil filter and inspect to see if it's new.

Guys the engine and turbos are already hot. Taking hot oil out and putting cold oil in, is just going to heat up the new oil. There is a TON of metal there that will retain plenty of heat.

I see what you're saying, but metal dissipates heat quickly, and has no where near the heat capacity of oil. Once you drained out the old oil, the heat stored in the metal will be gone quickly.. the oil might be brought up a bit to like 150F at most, but impossible to get back to 230F unless the engine was overheating a lot.

This was exactly my line of thought. The oil would heat up but would be impossible to get to 230F without running the car for a while. Miles In=Miles Out on the invoice, but who knows if that's accurate... I'll check the filter tomorrow for a little piece of mind.

Lucky you

Easy

Pull the dipstick out and look at the oil, if the oil is clear then it is new, if it is black then it is old.

If my 330 had a dipstick I would use a mitivac and change the oil through the dipstick tube.

Lets try some science. Hot engine, room temperature oil poured in said engine. Engine started and driven to the area you picked it up at. Do fluids held in a hot container heat up? Yes, do engines generate heat in a short period of time? Yes.

They also did a brake fluid flush. When I had my brake fluid flushed, the mechanic took it out for a test drive. I'd be surprised if they gave you your car back without a test drive.
