WTF is that smell
Here it goes... I have a 540i msports package and I run it hard when I drive it... Had an Acura TLS and drove it hard.. Now I am also driving 2011 335 x drive performance edition and it has about 1400 miles on it. I just got back from dinner and decided to open it up at about 120 on the back roads and when I pulled in my garage it smelled like plastic burning and some other stinky smell that I couldn't pin point what it was... Is this normal? I dont recal smelling that in any of my other cars. I understand the heat can cause some of the smell like plastic but there is a certain other smell along the plastic smell that doesn't seem normal.

I think this is normal for any new car. You are burning the residual chemicals off of your exhaust/engine.
That would be my guess. Otherwise..check under your hood..make sure there is not actually plastic burning anywhere?

BMWs used to get coated with cosmoline for protection from salt before shipping over the atlantic. It was then removed stateside. No idea if this is still done but that may be what you smell burning off.

That's what new exhaust smells like, usually. Enamel or whatever coatings tend to smell like that for a couple thousand miles. It's normal, and it probably won't cause too much cancer if you breathe it.

The AC wasnt on, it was a burning smell with some other awful smell. I guessed the car is still very new and the smell has something to do with it, I just dont remember my 540i or the Acura smelling like that when they were brand new and I got concerned.

It's normal with any new car.
Same thing happened to my father's '11 XJ after I took it out for a spirited drive. |
