Very strange 335i shutdown/reboot problem
I started having an issue with my 2007 335i a month ago and thought it had something to do with the battery draining but now I am not so sure. Car has <35K on it. So the problem started out as follows: I could go into work or a restaurant and come back out after words and try to start the car to find it completely dead, the doors will not even open with the remote. I can manually open the door and put in the key but nothing happens then after maybe 5-10 minutes sometime much longer the car will be completely fine again and have no struggle starting.
Well this morning on my way to work things got a lot worse. This problem has always happened after the car has been sitting for at least an hour but I was going about my normal drive to work and went to turn off my rear defroster (Don't know if this was coincidental) and it completely shutdown while still moving. Everything cut off immediately and the speedometer and tachometer were stuck at the positions they were at. I was able to coast safely to a parking lot where I could not remove the key nor start the car. As I was calling someone to come pick me up the car magically rebooted and everything was fine again. I know this post is long but this was really scary this morning so any help someone may have with this problem would be greatly appreciated. |

The last post that started like this ended with the car burning from the trunk to the steering wheel.
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=577054 Please take it to the dealership, this could be deadly serious. If you notice smoke or a burning smell DO NOT OPEN THE TRUNK as soon as oxygen hits the fire it will turn into a fireball. Last edited by Glim; 09-27-2011 at 11:58 PM.. |

If they do - get it on writing and do not put anything of value in the trunk, you can hold them liable for your insurance deduction.

Yeh that car fire was mine
Mine did the same thing, but never stopped while driving. The initial thought was the ignition switch was bad or going bad and sending extra voltage to the battery. Did you recently replace the battery? This is a known issue via the web if you search it. Lots of thoughts no definite answers... So mine just burned :/. Notify BMW na and call the dealer. Please! Keep all records of calls and notes in case anything happens. Hope not but protect yourself

Probably different issue, but just something to think about. last time something went completely dead on me was when my entire fuse board died.
BMW replaced it and everything was back to normal. |

I've had similar electrical problems happen to me twice within the same year... First time the car went completely dead and would not start. On the second time, the cars electrical went completely dead for a couple of seconds while I was driving on the freeway (though I still had control). After I parked, the car went dead again and the key fob was stuck... eventually everything started back up though in maybe 30 minutes later... this is really unsettling.
Update 4/25/2012: Happened to me again this morning. I called BMW NA and they logged the issue. They advised taking it in to another dealership to have it checked out, which I'll be doing. Updated 4/27/2012: Dealer service center said the issue was with a bad alternator. Car is out of warranty so it will cost me $1050 to replace. Last edited by mochidude; 04-27-2012 at 12:23 PM..
