Triptronic Transmission Automatically shifting for me?

Hey guys,

The tiptronic (paddle shifters, or manual shifting) automatically shifts for me? If I put it in first gear, it will automatically shift for me to the next gear without me touching anything - I don't like this. Is there a setting that I have to change?

I think it has built in limits where it shifts for you. I've noticed mine downshifting for me when I slow down and forget to do it myself.

Yea, it's to prevent engine damage I believe. I think I read somewhere that it wasn't like this before, but through a new software it was changed. It downshifts too quickly for me at times. Unfortanetly, there's nothing you can do about it.

Downshift I don't mind too much, but shifting up is VERY lame.

My two cents:

1. When you move to DS, the transmission will continue to shift automatically but on higher RPM's and more "sporty". It will downshift if needed.

2. If while in DS you shift manually then it will not shift for you, with the exception of 1st to 2nd. It will shift just before hitting the redline. This is to protect your engine. However, after it is in M2, the transmission will not shift automatically.

If you have the paddles and while driving in D you shift, it will stay for a few seconds in M and then go back to D. This us in case you want to override and downshift momentarily.

Hope this helps!

good summary. you would be surprised at how many people don't realize the shifter moves left into DS (and can be kept there) and that the M1 thru M6 even exist.

+1 on the summary. I figured it would automatically shift up if you hit redline in Manual mode in any gear to protect the engine, but of course I never tested that.

I had to tell the car salesman about DS. I mentioned sport mode and he said, "This car doesn't have it." So I had to show him.

Yeah, similar experience here. I was looking at a 2011 335i and the salesman kept talking about the twin turbo engine. I guess he was sleeping during the training...

Doesn't help that BMW slaps "Twin-Power Turbo" everywhere.

In M mode it will downshift automatically for you if your rpms are too low for that gear. I can hold a gear all the way to roughly 6800-7000rpm and let off the gas or hit the brakes and it will stay in that gear...

It won't shift up but it will cut-off fuel to keep from damaging the engine.

Exactly. And if you want to redline all gears, then leave it in DS and forget about M shifting.

In the M shift mode, the only time it shifts for you is when you hit redline, and when you hit very low rpm's (500-1000). At least that is how it works for me.

Correct!, In M mode it will also shift itself before hiting rev limiter at WOT.

The fuel cut is VERY noticeable.

That what I figured would happen. Hypothetically of course. . .
