Surely cars can't keep on getting faster forever?

I drove my car back to back with an RS4 and mine still felt quite fast. However, I also drove mine directly after driving the new M5 and the soot chucker felt like I was driving with the hand break on So I know what you're saying! But, it's not a slow car, the 330d. Took my mate out the other day (who is used to driving all kinds of super cars with 500+ hp) and he thought the bimmer was 'rapid', in his own words.

It will be the advance in materials that has the bigest effect. As the materials get stronger and lighter and the engines get more efficient they will just start putting smaller engines in which will result in higher mpg and the same if not lower 0-60 times.
The amount of work to keep getting quicker is exponential and the product development rather than mechanical will dictate how fast the cars go. otherwise there would just be 1 'super engine' with different trim and they will all go the same speed in a straight line with nobody bothering to develop or buy the more expensive engine. In fact I can imagine that happening eventually. |

Yeah, because once an engine that can take a normal sized car to 60 in say 3 seconds becomes cheap to make, why would they bother making slower variants.
Slower models will just be restricted by software, a bit like the later E90 325ds, which are the same as the 330d mechanically.

I'm on about the F30 330d. I've never seen any 0-100 time for that, have you? I agree the E9X 330d would be a second slower to 100 than a E9X 335d.
But a F30 330d? No-one knows yet until someone takes it down a drag strip or some journo actually bothers to test/review the new F30 330d. The fact that the F30 330d is 0.5 sec quicker to 60 now, the E9X 335d would have to make up A LOT of ground from 60-100 to beat it by 1 sec. I cant see thats possible. |

Also when do you think bigger power shows..??! Once they get going. 60-100 takes longer than 0-60...

Bentley ran into this problem with their Continental GT. They dropped in a smaller motor with about the same performance but claimed better MPG. I guess that is the new performance benchmark.

I only asked you (twice) how you know the 0-100 of an F30 330d. I've not seen it anywhere. So you are clearly better at using Google then me. (Even though you still havent shown me where you saw it). I dont doubt for one minute you are correct, but I'm interested in some stats for the F30 330d. Quote:

Still seems quite quick to 60. But clearly must lose pace from there own compared to the 335d. Just found this on the 335d on the same website: http://www.automobile-catalog.com/ca...35d_coupe.html 0-100 in 13.8 so only the F30 330d just 0.4 sec slower than the 335d. |

E9x 335D (marginally),and arguably all the car most will ever need. The 0-100mph times are/will be an irrevelance to most,as how often do you get to do those types of speeds in the UK,without risking losing your licence! Which brings us back to the original topic, yes cars will inevitably get quicker,it goes without saying. But most people are tired already of our overcrowded roads and the increasing spread/growth of speed cameras,so speed, that will be much harder to put to good use in the UK,will quickly drop down the list of priorities when people choose their cars.

http://www.automobile-catalog.com/ca.../bmw_330d.html But whatever, 6 cylinder Beemers are all pretty good. My new favourite car is the M135i. I'd never have one as its not big enough for the family. But a seriously quick car for the money. Again back the original post, how can they top this for the next 1M, performance wise? If they make it much quicker, it will have a 0-60 close to an M5 and we know they wont do that for marketing reasons. |

Yeah dopper, but Alot of the data is simulated. Autocar ran the real number. But wtf we're arguing about a nats ball hair of difference.
Agree that the marketing dept will have a say in how fast each model goes. |

My E46 only does 4.8 to 60... Only 0.6 quicker than the F30 330d, bloody well wastes it to 100 though. 11.2 vs 14.2...

You know, I was asking my brother this very question last night - after reading the new S3 will pack 300bhp and a 0-60 time of 5.1 seconds. There's very little difference between 'sports cars' and 'family' cars, in terms of performance now.
