Security upgrade
Rang BMW today to ask about security and BMW have booked my car in early next week for a security upgrade. Is this the upgrade that has been mentioned to stop e90s being stolen with reprogrammed keys? Nil cost, surprised to here. Can anyone shed light on the security upgrade I have been booked in for. Car E90 330 57 plate.

Yes that'll be the one. It disables the window self-opening facility when using the key in the door lock (not the remote).

Once you have had the update they can still steal your car. 1 smashed window and less than 60 seconds to programme a key via your OBD port. This is not a solution to the problem so please take other measure

When i had the security update done before christmas the Tech guy who done it reckons that apart from not being able to drop windows with the hard key, it is now not possible to chip a spare key via the OBD unless an original key is inserted in IGN, only qouting what i was told

And that is why you have not heard any car being stolen on which update was done. Despite of that, I'd still suggest everyone to move their obd port.

I'm sure I read somewhere that BMW were only doing the security upgrade on 2007 onwards cars, is that right or wrong please??

I went to my dealer to enquire for my 2005 E90 and my father 2007 E60 and my dealer said they were only doing X5's and X6's at present, but would get in touch if and when the car was needed for the security recall.

I find it strange they have come to that conclusion, I'd hazard a guess that bmw thinking less pre 2007 cars will be stolen due to lower values, or are bmw saying security was better in 2006 cars??

Thank all for the info. I have been told it is not a recall but an upgrade. They got funny with me when I called a recall/fix. Still looking into the extra security though. My car a 57 plate Dec 07.

I can't be arsed to go through the whole dealer process so I'm just going to move my port.

Booked mine in at coopers and they said off the record that it changes the coding of the OBD port so as to stop any extra keys being coded he said "BMW are keen to play down this so as to deflect attention from it and therefore stop any potential thieves from workarounds"
Everyone seems to think it's just a comfort window opening fix and nothing else but do,you really know? BMW coded the port software and it wouldn't take much for an experienced programmer to change one aspect of it. |

Sounds promising.
Still havent been contacted by my dealer for getting this done. (despite being put on there call back list... <_<) Even when they call, still going to move my ODB... not worth the risk for 5 min work. |

Hope thats not Coopers Norwich, after they did mine my Voice Command button on steering wheel no longer worked, that was back in Nov 12, the muppets have still not got a fix for it, they keep blaming BMW Germany say they are awaiting a software fix |

I got a letter from my insurance advising me to get it done. Not sure if your insurers did the same but the mere fact they said I should do it to me means that if its not done and your car is stolen, they can use that against you...or at least try
