Got my 330i over the weekend
Picked it up on Saturday. saph black/beige ette, comfort, bmw assist/bluetooth, and fold down rears. Sorry no sports package, don't hate on me, all you fanatics out there
So far I love it, I really love the comfort access though. It is so nice to just shut the door and touch the door handle, and the car is locked. the Bluetooth is awesome too, calls are crystal clear, the integration was seamless, I love making calls in my 330i. One concern is that I detected what seemed like a burning smell from the engine, it is mild though, is that normal for a bimmer? I came from a few used Honda Accords. Last night, drove home for about 30 miles, it was 37 degrees out, and when I parked it in the driveway, there was smoke or steam coming out of the front grill. It was also raining out, so maybe because of the combination of the temperature and the condensation? I popped the hood and nothing looked abnormal to me. I will keep a close eye on it, maybe this is normal for a Bimmer, or maybe its the breaking in process of a new engine? I picked the baby up with 2 miles on it! Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Well, I plan on getting it fully detailed this coming week, I hope its not too late to seal it up from the elements, even though it has already rained on it. I also plan on getting 35% all around the car. One of the first flaw I've noticed about it though is that it seems too easy for someone else to change the memory presets for the car. My sister sat in it to check it out, and was adjusting the seats, and accidentally hit the memory button and then the 1 button and changed my configuration. I wish the memory buttons were not RIGHT NEXT to the seat adjustment buttons. Is there a way to configure the presets so that it is not so easy to change?? |

congrats on your new car!
i think the burning smell is common for E90s, unless you have a manual tranny and are burning the clutch. but yeah, i noticed that smell in every E90 i drove so i hope it's something normal. as far as the memory seats, i've never had the problem so can't help you there...

Chances are certain components in the engine bay havent been heat broken yet, I like that 'HEAT BROKEN'.
It happened with my last car and my E90, it should go away pretty quickly after you put some miles on the car.

Cosmoline burning off? Very common on new cars - should go away shortly. Also, there will be some lubrication probably from fasteners, etc. that will burn off as well. Every new car I've owned to some extent had that and it is temporary.

Every new car I have ever started at the dealership has that smell. I have gotten used to it, must be some part of the break-in process. It seems as if the Mini Cooper S has the biggest smell, but goes away quickly.

Any particular reason you got leatherette. I got leatherette in my 330 and know regret it. You cannot slide in leatherette...you feel like you are stuck to the seats...

My commute is quite short, around 15-20 minutes each way, so I'm not finding my butt sweating much on leatherette. Anyone with commutes longer than 30 minutes or in warmer/hotter weather will probably appreciate the "breathability" of leather vs. leatherette.

Congrats on your new car. A wonderful machine.
I am very familiar with the new car smell from the interior like everyone else, but not to cause you anguish, I have never experienced a new car burning smell. My only experience with bad car smells was when I had my manual e36 and 46 cars and drove them hard. Bad smell then. With steptronic, no bad smell. I'm sure it's like the others have posted. Should be OK after you put a few kays (miles) on the clock. Let engine parts settle & mesh etc. All the best.

I've had a smell too. In fact today it's the first time that I really haven't smelled it in the garage after pulling it in at night.
In fact I saw smoke/steam coming off the body while I was washing the car this weekend.

I just didn't think it was worth the money to upgrade to Premium for Leather. I've read leatherette is more durable than Leather and it dosen't get that cracking/creasing look after some wear. As far as comfort and feel of the 'ette, I came from cloth upholstery, so, it is a huge upgrade already. Anyhow, the money I saved on Leather, I put into Comfort Access, and it rocks! The 'ette feels fine to me, no complaints on that. Its all about personal taste.
Thanks for everyone's feedback on the engine smell though. Just a little thing inquiry though, I can hear a little wind noise from my moonroof while driving above 65-70 mph. Do you guys/gals get that with your car? Oddly, I did not notice the windnoise until Monday, and I picked up the car on Saturday. I keep reopening and closing the moonroof thinking it did not shut tightly. Is it just me? |

Congrats!
Sounds pretty sport to me, 6MT -- correct? I think I'd prefer a non-sport 330i over my sport 325i -- My big back has no love for those seats!
