Rear tires middle section wearing faster
I have the Michelin PS A/S 3 tires front and back. Excellent tires.
Here is the problem... In the rears, middle section of tire treads are wearing out much faster, while outer side is maybe twice thicker....now you might think I "overinflated" the tires, right? NO! It's 255x3518s wrapping around VMR VB3 wheels. So I had it up to 38psi before and over time I checked and I see middle area gradually wearing faster, so I deflated to 34psi. But it seems to make little difference. I have OFT and I get on it sometimes but this problem in the middle is concerning me. Low tire pressure means bad MPG. Anyone? What size are the wheels? Maybe improperly sized tire for the rim?
Also, once you have uneven wear, fixing your tire pressures won't fix it. Now you will wear properly, and everything will wear at the same rate, so you'll still have the middle more worn.

Are you suggesting that 38psi is too high for it? The manual says 42psi for up to 100mph, or 36psi for over 100mph. So I'm way below the speed. I emailed the VMR for pressure info and the jerks never replied to me. Thanks for the the fact that I'm stuck with uneven wear now. No amount of deflation will even out the wear. |

I really need to find out about the stock size tires on wider VMR VB3 wheels like I have. Front is .5" wider than the stock size, but the rears are full 1" wider. Anyone have this issues? I need to get to the bottom of this contact patch problem. |

I had the same problem with my Conti DW and pilot super sports. I ran lower pressure and now I run about 38. I can go through 2 sets of rears before I go through one set of fronts. I think that is just the way it is. Let me know if you have the answer

Do you run wider wheels or stock? How many miles did your rear tires last? 38psi is definitely too high for my rears. I was on 36psi and still chewing up the middle area. |

My wife went through a rear set of Michelin's long before the fronts. These were stock 255/40-17 and ran at the recommended tire pressure.
On the flip side, I went through a front set of General's and inside and outside wore completely off even though I was running higher pressure... even checked the alignment twice. Rears were perfect.... That's the main reason I switched my wagon to a square setup running 255's. I can freaking rotate tires now. |

My wheels are wider. I'm running a 9.5 in the rear. I was running a 10 with the conti dsw. and you are right I will most likely go through 3 sets of rears before replacing the fronts. I got around 12 to 15 thousand miles out of the rear

More if it wears evenly but it doesn't look like. We're you running stock pressure and stock size tires on wide wheels? |

Keep your pressure down to about 33-34 when you get the new tires. It looks like your tires are too far gone for it to make a huge difference now.

I contacted Michelin and they also recommend BMW specs. I contact God and he says F* IT!!! I think it's Michelin's issue. It's a new tire design from scratch. Why FRONTS 225 don't have problem but rear 255 have it??? I don't wanna have these kind of problems in the future and AVOID MICHELIN PS A/S 3 tires. Although they are good gripping tires and pretty decent warranty, it will last a short life like the more sticky PSS because of this. Product defect is what I can come up with....typical of new product design flaw. I lowered it to 34psi and already seeing terrible fuel MPG!!!!! |

Maybe doing an alignment may help a bit
