Replacing Motor Mounts

Anyone replaced the motor mounts on the N52 XI version? I got the passenger side off very easy; however, I don't see how to take the driver's side out without removing the front axle (no room to remove the mount). Ideas?

Do you have any shop manuals to use as reference? If not them get some, bentley, haynes etc.

guys, FYI 335IS has a new part number for the right side mount. N52 uses n54 n55 mounts. People report improvements

I understand having stiff motor mounts may help transfer power better, but I think you're probably more likely to notice the extra vibration than the better power transfer. Not really something I want to put up with. Personally, I decided to just go with the OEM spec motor mount for my model.

Have the Bentley manual and frankly find it quite basic. I does not cover anything but routine maintenance (perhaps a little more). Definately not worth the cost of the manual.

Ferg - did you ever find a DIY for this? I'm concerned mine may be bad but am looking for any information before I jack the car up.

But let me get something straight here. How would a 328i w/335is motor mounts or 335i w/335is motor mounts have any more NVH than a 335is?

i believe pelican parts website has a diy on motor mounts along with comments from folks who've tried and hit issues.

The 335IS design is reinforced to last longer, still OEM spec NVH

great question. I guess I'd agree with Casca in practice though. Too much labor to risk it not turning out right.

Unfortunately I have not replaced the driver's side mount yet. I've just been kind of dealing with the noise although it is still annoying.

Apparently the original mounts in the x35i were prone to failure. This is subjectively what caused the belt contacting the sub frame issue in those cars. I don't think that putting those mounts in would even noticeably increase NVH, especially from something as silky-smooth as the N52! BUT there was never anything wrong with the original motor mounts for the N52, so I don't see the significance of using alternative ones.

Did we ever really determine if the mounts will help keep the power steering pulley from hitting the subframe? I'd like to get this done if possible, but I don't want to pay the labor costs (and get the false confidence) if its only a hunch.
