We have finished testing, and they are being machined just now. They will be available in a few weeks time. Just FYI, any BMW specialist worth their weight will already know how to modify the oem c-clip and aftermarket shims to correctly install an LSD. If you are DIY, the blame is not on us, however, we are the ONLY manufacturer to go out of our way to specifically machine these new c-clips and shims so that our customers don't have to do this themselves. Your comment really doesn't go down too well, especially as we are the only company pro-actively helping you with this... or you can go out and spend several hundred dollars on a shim kit from the other BMW Specialists if you don't want to wait. Or maybe I should just back-off from this AU thread altogether and not help you at all, seeing as I'm not actually responsible for the AU market anyway? I am the US Sales Rep, not the AU Sales Rep. I am doing this to HELP you on my time, not because I have to. If you accept my help, you will have to be patient. If not, then...

As you say a reputable diff specialist should be able to solve this sort of issue anyway. However, I appreciate your efforts and have been waiting patiently. I'd rather be armed with everything that is needed just to ensure it is done properly rather than risk an apprentice or someone who just whacks it in. |

Been waiting since December for the prototype unobtanium shim circlips. Quote:
They could not set backlash because the circlips cannot be "machined" down... If you remove thickness from one clip, you need to add thickness to the opposite clip. If you don't, you're simply adding play between the shafts. So... the product was sold as a drop-in, direct fitment for our cars. Yes, it does require an experienced installer, but how were they expected to have specialist BMW circlips on hand, when you know that they aren't sold individually by BMW? It just seems like a poorly planned product that was sold as drop in replacement, when it wasn't. Basically it's source-it-yourself half kit. Of all the BMW pieces we have to take out to fit the LSD, we're now being told we can't take them ALL out because the M-factory LSD doesn't include ALL new required replacements in their kit... We have to re-use some BMW parts to fit the LSD. Oh, but wait those OEM BMW parts won't fit either, so just machine them down... Oh, but wait, you can't machine one side down, as you need to then increase the dimension on the other side, but you can't 'add' thickness by machining. So use a new circlip. Oh, but wait, you actually need a thicker than OEM circlips for machining, but BMW don't sell individual differential parts, and due to the circlip design you can't just use a generic shim kit. Now M-factory realises the oversight and promises to machine some circlips to solve the problem... but they promised that almost 5 months ago... for some circlips. I am usually very patient, but I can't understand why there is so much testing and development required for a circlip that should be basically identical to what is already there... just slightly thicker dimensions. I feel like something doesn't add up, so yeah, I am a bit annoyed. |

Again, as mentioned, ALL BMW LSD's are supplied as-is; none of them come with c-clips or shims. Infact, most Japanese, US or European LSD's are not supplied with c-clips or shims. That may be case with your AU Domestic Diffs, but certainly not the case with 90%+ of aftermarket LSD's on the market. The way you are posting, it's as if this is an MFactory-only problem, of which it is not. I understand that you are frustrated, but you are specifically targeting us with this problem and making it out as if we're the bad guy here, when all I am trying to do is help.
Yes, we admit that this can be a problem for "some" (not all, as a lot of places do know how to shim a diff), which is why we are going out of our way to fix this problem. If you are upset with the wait, then may I suggest you take it to a better mechanic? If your current mechanic has all the experience that you say, then it should be no problem for them to machine down the oem c-clips and then fill the space with shims (which is what every BMW specialist has to do. How do you think we manage to install all these LSD's? It's not magic, it's common sense) to set the correct backlash. You don't need the oem BMW shims; if you have an experienced installer. Anyway, good luck with our AU sales rep (who isn't on this forum BTW, so you'll have to email/call him). You can contact him when the shims are ready. I'll just hop on back to where I'm supposed to be i.e The US forums.

LotusBMW had the M-factory installed with no probs as far as I know but he has some fairly serious hardware in the garage so I'm sure he knew about the backlash/shimming and had it done properly. He was happy with it anyway.
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...1028838&page=4 I assume a good diff place could machine the parts but I'd rather have them with me so I will wait patiently. But I agree it has been a long wait. Mfactory - please update us again once the shims are ready. |

Looks like I am real late to the party but is this deal still available. I have a 2006 E91 335i Touring auto. As I understand it it has the large case and bolted ring gear. Is there a suitable option for this car?

lol no chance in hell at the current exchange rate you'd think. They retail for 1000 USD which is nearly 1400 AUD. Worth emailing them maybe, but $650 AUD off would be pushing it
