330D Hesitation...
Hi all,
I've noticed in the last 48 hours that there has been an occasional slight hesitation on the throttle on my car. This can be at either constant speed or during acceleration ad is VERY slight. Has anyone got any ideas what might be causing this or is it a trip to the stealer again?

Hi Nathan,
My E90 330d would do this occasionally. Like a little hiccup. I think that it's been mentioned before and there is no fix for it. I didn't worry about it and the car now has 40k miles on the clock with no adverse affect. Cheers Matt |

Hmmmm,
Well it hasn't done it in the previous 25,000 miles so I class it as a problem..... which BMW need to fix. Anyone else suffered this?

Sounds like a re-map is required, this will get rid of any flat spots, and make it a lot smoother

A drop of 'bad' petrol perhaps?

Perhaps you could get the dealer to check the particulate trap?

LMAO!
I think a trip to the dealer is in order then (That should be fun this side of Xmas). Crazy as it seems but it has only started happening since I've been driving a little more reserved (just a test to see the ACTUAL effect on mpg). I guess booting it will sort it out Are remaps advisable on manual cars?

I saw a posting relating to the E90 330d on http://www.peachorlemon.co.uk however that owner was reporting what he called turbo lag, apparently recognised by BMW as a fault. As it seemed to be an isolated report I didn't let it put me off, and I have had no such problems with mine
I've pasted the article below. BMW 3 Series 3000cc 330d M Sport E90 Diesel Automatic Saloon 2005 This is the third 330d M Sport BMW diesel Automatic I have purchased. This is the first of the new shape models the E90. I Would not advise anyone to buy this car, it suffers from Turbo Lag which BMW Customer Service have confirmed to me. This I consider to be dangerous. As it happens when you slow down and then accelerate again, Beware!!! You have been warned. The car was built in December 2005 and bought brand new in the UK throgh the BMW dealer network in March 2006. |

No, this is definitely NOT turbo lag as it happens in the rev rage where the turbo would be spooled up and working. Lag only occurs when you're effectively waiting for the turbo to kick in.
This feels almost like a misfire on one cylinder and happens for a split second. I'm wondering if it is in fact a dodgy batch of fuel?

Possible I guess. A friend of mine ended up with half a tank of water in his M3 a few months back from a Texaco garage.
Which was nice.....

As you say, try giving it a good boot and see how it goes!

I'm pretty sure, I experience what you are describing. It occurs only on light throttle (eg. constant speed) and usually just under 2000rpm. (Following other traffic?) If the throttle is pushed on just slightly, you feel a hesitation for part of a second, then it feels normal. I've put it down to another type of 'turbo lag'.... Not because it's just coming into the turbo range. (On my 325, this starts about 1200rpm), It's beacuse the engine is so lightly loaded under these conditions, that there is not sufficient exhaust flow to keep the turbo spinning at operating speed. It's not just engine rpm that spins the turbo, it's the exhaust gas flow. If you are never particularly gentle with the throttle, you'll never experience it... I'm not going to let a dealer fook about with it 'cos I'm sure it'll come back with more problems than it went in with!!! Leave well alone mate! |

My 325d always did this from 8 miles on the clock, there were a few posts from around the world all saying the same. |

The thing that I found annoying with the 330d was the off throttle boost loss, ie when you came up behind someone at around 90 and lifted off and then planted it after they had pulled over to find that you had lost all your boost and had to wait untill it built up again. The 335d is better in this respect but it is a trait most turbo engines suffer from. You can of course reduce it with some clever driving
Regards Chris
