Active steering?
I can't imagine why a loss of battery power would affect the steering... The only thing I can think of, besides an Active steering fault, is the Electronic Steering Lock. Early E90's have an electronic version of the mechanism that locks the steering wheel when the key is removed from the ignition. You know how old cars won't let you turn the steering wheel when the car is off? If you try to wiggle it back and forth a significant amount, you can feel and hear it hit the lock. On 3 series, you can hear it unlock when you push the key in the socket or hit the start button. That being said, I thought later E90's had the lock disabled from the factory. So this might not apply to your friends 328. Give us a bit more info on the exact behavior, what it feels/sounds like and when/how it occurs. |

Same thing happened to me. I'm almost positive it is a security feature on the car. (It's assuming theft). Only solution was I threw it on a rollback and took it to BMW and they coded it to unlock it.
