am I right in thinking there is some sort of connection here between the brake pedal switch being engaged properly to allow the wheel to unlock ?

i.e. pushing the brake pedal hard enough when starting the car.

or is that a different fault ?

It seemed a common fault a year or so back, the solution at the time was to replace it. Loads of people in the US seemed to be complaining about it but haven`t heard any recently.

I had it and they replaced only a sensor, not the steering column.

There were quite a few reported problems some time ago, so a good : should turn something up.

The courtesy 330d I had sounded like some sort of ratchet wasn't properly removed at times. But hey-ho it wasn't mine and never actually failed.

Spoke to the dealer today, car going in on Wednesday for appraisal, but as far as they are concerned the only cure is a new steering column.

Will keep you all informed of the outcome.

Update

Car has been in today dor diagnosis.

It does not need a new steering column but needs reprogramming.

The car is booked in for next Monday and I have been told it could take all day.

What do you guys think?

Yep, reprogramming takes a whole day. Must be the 300 baud modem they use.

Exactly a week after having had the car re-programmed the electronic steering wheel issue has just re-surfaced.

This time the only cure is a new column.

Booked in for next Monday.
