335d turbo and exhaust problems
smell around the engine and inside the vehicle.
This is what the problem was: there is a pipe around the turbos which is responsible for oil return into the engine. Basically oil is pushed out of the engine due to high compression and the powerful turbos, and this pipe is supposed to return the oil into the engine. This "pipe" was not connected properly and a piece was missing, and therefore oil was slowly but surely leaking into the turbos... From time to time this oil would burn up inside the turbo pipes which is the cause of the bad exhaust smell around the turbo area. (see picture at the top) If you have this exhaust smell then you should take it to the shop to ensure that this "pipe" is connected properly. If you see any oil around the area then you definitely have this problem. the turbos on the 335d are very complicated... The turbos are the reason why this engine is so powerful. 335d drivers beware! if you smell exhaust then you need to have this tested or buy a cheap co2 alarm to test it yourself! here is a picture of the 335d engine with description of the problem areas that I discovered. not really good news, maybe some EU guys could chime in. I've sent the link to this thread to a 335d owner I know, we will see.
Anyway - it is possible. The sd technology is new to BMW, maybe it needs some finetuning. Robm. > this thread is not dedicated to US users

that doesnt sound good! exhaust leak that ends up in the cabin can lead to serious problems. If the driver does not realize it, its quite possible that they could pass out while driving!

I am really unhappy... I had to buy a carbon monoxide detector which goes off every few minutes...
I had some exhaust smell coming in through the vents so I popped the hooded to have a look around the engine. While looking around I noticed that the smell was very intense around the turbos so I has a closer look with a flashlight and I noticed a lot of oil was leaking out around the turbo. I took it to the shop and they replaced the turbos. Now I am starting to smell some exhaust from time to time and I hear a lot of ticking noises around the turbo and the exhaust. BTW I have a 335d. |

Want some real feedback ? - then post this in the UK section.
You'll find many owners of 335Ds in that section. Including me - NEVER yet heard of any turbo failures on a 335D (335i - yes). D.

The engine is new, so some failures are just about to show up. Anyway, this can be a really rare issue which has to be taken care of. Bmw handles it, replaces the failed parts, it's ok. Just dont cover your eyes and say it does not exists because U and your friends did not exoerience it. Also dont forget to put your nose under the hood from time to time, just for sure.

well the turbos did not fail but thy were leaking oil and exhaust gases all over the place... they were replaced before they failed.
The new turbos seem to work ok but now I noticed another oil leak on the right side of the turbo and it seems to be coming from the engine. this is the first diesel that i ever owned so I must ask: Is this normal with a diesel? |
