Got broken into this morning

Between the time of 3-5 am my 335i, along with 6 other cars, we're broken into. I've been wondering -WHY ON EARTH DIDN'T THE ALARM GO OFF?! I understand that some of the older higher end cars that got broken into may not have triggered an alarm, but a 2008 335i should want to make a fuss when somebody collapses in the driver side window. Am I wrong? What's up with that?!?

Did you install an alarm. They don't come with the alarm from the factory just the prewiring.

Nope. I didn't realize they didn't come with some version of one. Thanks for the tip. I'll be looking into viper or some other systems today.

This is why I always try to purchase the 2 way alarm systems. This way the remote will alert me when the car is alarming.....sorry to hear about your car being broken into.

I'm just wondering why on earth would someone still broke in to cars nowadays? Makes no sense whatsoever. Days when car stereos were sold in black market are long gone lol. I mean unless you have some cellphone and laptop left visible on the seat - there is no sense to get into someones car. Damn, even cellphones lost attraction they once were to thieves as technology is overly complicated and no one will buy a locked and traceable used cellphone lol. Maybe they can sell it for parts lol for pennies, but that's hardly going to make up even for a metal pry bar from home depot lol. I genuinely am amazed this kind of stuff is still going on at some areas of country lol
All they can find in my e90 will be a 5 y.o. TomTom 3'' lcd screen GPS lol that goes for $3 dollar and 50 cents in local thrift shops. Well maybe burglars can also get some napkins from Subway left over in glove-box too

Tell me about it. They pulled my Sirius satellite display off then probably realized they wouldn't get anything for it, and threw it back in the car... ridiculous

I hate it when that happens. Hopefully nothing got broken like locks or glass

Well nothing on the Sirius display and no locks, but definitley broken glass. Thank goodness for the window tint, it kept most of it together so cleaning was only half a pain

A 2008 like yours will probably have the prewiring for the OEM alarm, it can be added for 300 in parts plus labor. I had a viper alarm in my E36 and it was a piece of shit

300 at BMW? I gotta look into that. Honestly I worried that something like viper or excalibur would be too mass produced and lack detail. Lots of reviews I have read speak to just that.

I don't think it makes a lot of sense to install alarm right now. This kind of stuff happens very rarely nowadays - you have to be really stupid to break into car lol. Probability of this happening twice is close to Nil. Besides, alarm won't do a damn difference anyway - if they broke windows - alarm won't prevent that. They can brake window and then run anyway

Yes for real - alarm is optional in U.S.

Cars up to late 2009 build date still are pre-wired for alarm - which means to install is EZ, after that, no pre-wiring & install is too much PITA & mucho $$, so not worth it for factory alarm

I have seen the alarm that can be added to our cars for about $225.00. Check this forum, ECS and FCP for starters. Not that difficult of a DIY.

Sucks that someone would do that. Hopefully, they didn't get much. Stock radios probably aren't worth much to thieves.

Some cars came with an alarm, it was an option. If your car beeps when you unlock and lock then you have the factory alarm.

Sorry to hear about the break in. Try an alarm, or find a different place to park. If they broke in that many cars, it was most likely someone with a substance abuse problems who was trying to find anything they could sell quickly. An alarm might not deter this person who is probably not all that worried about being caught.

this is true. I don't have an alarm either so the car can be broken into, driven off, and stripped without so much of a beep of the horn

the good news is your car is probably pre wired for an alarm and they've gotten cheaper over the years

still not worth it. instead, spend the $ and time to install a nice 360 degree dashcam that has a shock sensor, gps, and texts you when the vehicle moves and exactly where it is.

Alarms are getting old school

One of the worst experiences I've ever had was having a passenger side window broken into (on my previous car) in NYC because i was stupid enough to leave my radar detector out. The 4 hour trip back to VA in the winter was not fun...

That's great advice. The more I read the more I've come to find alarms miss the mark. Do you have a brand you recommend? I'm assuming you are using some version of one

Sorry to hear that man. Shit happens. You said 6 other cars got hit as well? I bet at least one of them had an alarm and that didn't stop them. When I hear an alarm go off I automatically assume its my neighbor pressing the wrong button or something. When is the last time you heard an alarm and went running to check it out? Save your money and use it to fix your window/radio in case it happens again.
