There is another interesting thread on oil coolers on this forum.....
But see Jegs... http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/store...10629_-1_10445 All the coolers are under $200 including the Ford Racing. Don't be complacent chumps! $2000 for an oil cooler is CRAZY!

I wonder if BMW would help pay the bill for those of you that did not get the OEM one.

Well, we should feel very lucky for the US prices. I asked the guy who was presenting my car at BMW Welt on Nov 30th 2007 about the price of my 335i sedan in Germany--he said with my options (MT, metallic paint, premium, sport, heated seats) the car would be about 50K euro. This is $75k with the current exchange rate. He said that BMW always sells their new cars 20-30% cheaper on the US market. But now because of that wacky exchange rate we can buy German cars almost twice as cheap as they can get them themselves. Meanwhile, I paid $43k on the road in the States. By the way, ED program gives these special discounts only to the North American customers. All other nation, including Germans, can come and buy the car at the BMW Welt in Munich, have fun etc, but the savings are minimal. I understand something like $500. Thanks God for the saturated US market.

Actually it was 31 hours and 6 min--I think. You can read this info in the last Automobile (I think January). Average speed with all stops about 90 mi/hr, reaching 160 at some places. M5.

long term impact on reliability
Hi everyone,
think about buying a 335 and the Dinan software but curious to know if anyone has heard about long term (4-8 years) impact of increasing the boost on turbo or engine reliability on other cars? Obviously Dinan feels that these components will be fine for <4 years by their warranty but if one has to replace the turbo/engine after the warranty expires then the cost of this would not justify the software. Better to put the money up front for an M3 and save in the end. Also obvious that there's no data on this car yet WRT my question. No other recent BMW turbos to compare to either. The most reasonable comparo might be a 6-8 year old blown merc with similar setup or a blown 300Z (my thought is a good quality car, with a turbo that has been boosted beyond factory setup). Anyone heard anything from a mechanic, owner or themselves on how this impacts longevity? Separately, in soliciting quotes from insurance co's they all have said that they will not insure modified vehicles. Know of any co's that do? What is a reasonable increase in premiums, on a percentage basis. This type of mod might go unnoticed in the case of a claim as it's software, so the insurance co wouldn't know unless they hooked up the car to a computer. Anyone know if they do this as part of their investigation in the case of a claim? Thanks! B. |

long term reliability on engine
just thinking that a merc probably isn't a good example as it probably isn't possible to increase the boost on a supercharger with software as it's crank driven, unless the sprocket sizes are modified. Not an expert on this by any stretch.

To answer, while they haven't been without problems, the B5 S4 is a forced induction counterpart. Now over eight years since hitting the North American shores, many are still running strong in near stock form. And then there are those that are making tremendous power with upgrades.

I don't think you can just make a comparison to another turbo cars. The B5 S4's from what I know have had quite a few issues, but that's b/c of heat problems with K03 turbos that are in them. But the 1.8T engine with K03's in the A4's hasn't had the same issues. So there are so many factors, not just xx% more boost causes an increase in failures of xx%, but the whole package. Plus, with turbo cars, you have to be a lot more careful with proper warm up and cool down to not let the oil cake in the lines, which will cause premature turbo failure.

I owned and upgraded a nearly 400 WHP S4 and was aware of the issues. Mainly being the K03's as well as some other nuisance matters. It may not be an absolute comparison but it should give an idea on what the future hold (or could be completely off).

first the 300z has a high compression in stock form so any boost isnt health in the long term. I've looked into this for my G for quite awhile bottom line wont last. now a car that has turbo already has a safe area of boost not touched for various reasons, the bmw "should" handle the xtra boost without problems (as long as the boost is resonable). Now the insurance question is one I had also... if i add the Dinan tune to my car what happens... will the insurance reimburse me for the 2k for a total loss , i know dinan will. I guess its a moot point. The only comments i've heard about insurance companies offering insurance on modified vehicles are ones that deal with mods/ such as show cars or rare cars. *shrug* ppp
