Suicidal airline mechanic steals empty plane, chased by F15s before crashing
'Suicidal' Alaska Airlines Mechanic Steals Empty Plane, Chased by Military Jets Before Crashing Preliminary information suggests that the mechanic stole the Horizon Air Q400 and the crash occurred because the person was "doing stunts in air or lack of flying skills". Two military F-15s pursued the plane but were not involved in the crash.

Dude was in Seattle. They scrambled F15s from Portland. 200 miles away. Damn. Think about just how fast those planes are when, you know, you just scramble them from what is a 3 to 6 hours (depending on traffic) drive for all of us. Amazing!
Local coverage here is video and transcript of communications with air traffic control: https://komonews.com/news/local/stol...seatac-airport |

I’m glad he didn’t do it with a plane full of passengers, or worse yet, sabatoge a bunch of planes he was working on or had access to.

Even less if they break the sound barrier.
I wonder what the protocols are for when they can and cant exceed the speed of sound. No breaking the sound barrier over populated areas, I think is a general rule the military follows. But does that go out the window in some sort of emergency? At top speed that's what, maybe a 7 or 8 minute flight? Scrambles my brain just thinking about it thats so fast! |

Even at the speed of sound it would still take 15 minutes to go 200 miles (~767 miles per hour)

My Stepfather was a radar operator in the Air Force, stationed in Turkey, when the SR71 was still top secret. Their commander came through the radar room one day and told everyone they were going to see an "anomaly" on their screens, and just ignore it. It was, what he thinks, was an SR71 doing some sort of speed test. Couple blips on the screen and it was gone. Like nothing he had ever seen before. Pretty cool! Still amazes me that it was designed and constructed in a pre-computer era. |

I went supersonic many times but it was only on FCFs (functional check flight). These were periodic flights required for each aircraft. Had to check to make sure that the F-4 would reach it's Mach 2.2 top speed or document the max speed that it would reach. Of course there were other things at supersonic flight that were checked, like intake ramps functioning, etc., but those were the only times.
