Tesla Model 3 track mode makes it faster than a Ferrari 458 around a track
What are thoughts here? I don't see how it's possible for this 3800-4000 lb car to go around a track faster than a 458.
From the article linked below: "The new time essentially matches a 2016 Porsche Cayman GT4 and even beats a former Best Driver's Car winner, the 2011 Ferrari 458 Italia (1:22.30). Until the new BMW M3 shows up, that perches the Model 3 atop the podium as the world's quickest sport sedan—at least around this track." https://www.businessinsider.com/tesl...8-11?r=UK&IR=T |

Not sure how it’s beating or coming close to some of these cars on that list. |

I don't care what anyone says, throw out the motorcycles and that thing is in the Top 10.
That's a pretty impressive job by the Tesla guys (with a major assist from Randy Pobst) for a car known as a one-trick pony

I'd like to see what it does on the nordschleife.
I mean that willow springs track is the size of a go-kart track if laptimes are 1:20. My point is that the previous model S failed miserably in the sense that it had absolutely no stamina to keep delivering that performance. After a few corners it went into some limp mode because the batteries could not deliver I think. I'd like to see if they solved that problem. True sportscars (also electric ones) should have some stamina I think. Even that electric sls amg that Mercedes presented back in 2012 (!) could handle a lap on the nordschleife back then and set a time of 7:56. (which is much much faster than any Tesla lap I've seen) I think that electric SLS technically still the fastest electric production car on the Nordschleife. It was for sale in 2014. That chinese Nio hypercar still isnt for sale I believe (but obviously very much faster)

irrelevant.
track times are TOTALLY USELESS as a parameter for how enjoyable a car is on the street. Modern car culture has made track times some sort of bulletproof criteria for which people to assess cars; the reality is that it's like walking into a grocery store and buying food based on how much it weighs rather than the taste. Irrelevant and pointless.

Anyone that chooses a Tesla over a Ferrari, if funds weren’t limited, should be sectioned, and never set free.

One fast lap with a tesla engineer riding shotgun tweaking the cars brain to prevent it from burning the car to the asphalt while laying down a good time. Not impressive.
The cars batteries drain so quickly at speed that after a short period on the track seconds are added to elapsed time every single lap. The top dog S model hasn't even been able to get a complete lap at the Ring without running into battery save mode to prevent fire and those times completed have not come close to top tier cars or even middle tier. They might be the wave of the future but they have a ways to go before being competitive on the track. |

R&T has a track review of the Model 3 Performance with track mode. Quick summary. One lap of 1.5mile Lime Rock uses about 9 miles of battery life. Full power lasts 3 to 4 laps, before it starts gradually cutting power due to heat. R&T had two Model 3's for test, fully charged prior to test. Both cars depleted the batteries before the morning was up. Looks like the M3 has a number of years ahead at remaining one of the best options for dual purpose weekend track car.

Yeah I know that video. 2:36 is a very interesting moment. Handles like a boat (as far as performance cars go)
