This thread has been very helpful. My engine also started ticking a couple weeks back after 20K miles. The dealer confirmed the noise and replaced my tranny but the noise is back after one day. It appears as though BMW doesn't have a fix for this problem (replacing valve lifters, cylinder heads, tranny, HVA bleeding...).

Has anyone heard if BMW is going to issue a recall? There are obviously enough people on this thread to show it's not an atypical problem. I'm going back to the dealer on Monday. The Tech I've been working with has been awesome but it sounds like he may not be able to fix this problem.

After the head replacement on Thursday, there is always a weird vibration and noise from the engine or under the tranny (I dunno) when I start the car everytime. Anyone knows what's going on with that? The car is totally a nightmare...I will bring it back again tomorrow!

Sounds like something similar to what I experienced. Does it vibrate the whole car when you start it (kinda feels like when you are cold and you shutter)? Does your revs drop to slightly above 500 and suddenly rise to slightly above 1000rpm and drops back down?

My car still has that vibration when its cold even after they found out what the problem is, but I don't care anymore as I'm replacing the car cause its just too much of a hassle to deal with.

I'm sorry to see these videos are our legacy here....
A year after replacing our lifters, the ticking has never gotten quite as obnoxious. Compared to how often it happened before, it hardly ever happens anymore. We've given up, have too many other things to deal with and otherwise the car runs great. We are up to 25k miles now with only occasional ticking.

For those of you having problems getting the dealer to "replicate" the issue on-site, have them leave the car running. I think on our 3rd or 4th visit they finally just let the car sit at idle and after 20min or so it started clattering away and became very obvious that we weren't delusional.

bad news ---

so around 10k miles i got the dreaded ticking sound in my e90 330i. they replaced the lifters, but that did not fix the problem. took it back in, and they replaced the lifters AND exhaust side camshaft. that took care of the sound. however, i'm now at 29k miles, and i think its come back (very infrequently, and at a much lower volume than before).

i absolutely don't know what to do now--my first instinct is to sell the damn car and buy a honda before the warranty runs out. i guess i expected a better quality control and product development process from BMW...sucks

So I have temporarily solved my ticking issue with a 'duh' moment.

I'm the advocate for engines only ticking with non-commuters, or people who aren't driving on the interstate. So I thought, why not just make my car think its on the interstate? Get the revs up and it goes away, right?

Put the car in M mode and keep the gears low to keep the RPMs high. Ticking goes away for a few days simply on a 5 minute trip through town. I know it's not a solution, merely treating symptoms, but it makes me happy knowing I don't have to go drive on the interstate for 20 minutes, I can just drive in M mode!

Hey you were right! 3 months ago, I was naive enough to try to settle with BMWNA myself, but they were just not taking me seriously. Give me all kinds of BS and told me I need to be patient. I will get the call ONCE they start to review my case!

Finally I have the attorney do the magic and boom..got my case closed within 12days

UPDATE: Spoke to a service advisor, spoke to a shop foreman, now they're putting in an order for cylinder head replacement parts. But they said it might take until August to get the parts?!!? Whats up with that? Anybody heard of this?

Phila, hang in there. I know how that feel! Why dont you just tell them to do the bleeding procedure instead of want them to hear that damn ticking sound? Don't just leave your car to dealer b/c u still only got 1 invoice no matter how long they keep the car. Get as many as fix history and invoice, then let attorney do the magic!

Tell you the truth. Even the head replacement wont fix the problem..i mean it did fix the ticking but the car is just never the same and create other weird problems. That's just so !@#$@#%

So, I am now at 13K on my 06 330. Took the car in today for the two year service and told the new service mgr. about this ticking that I have been hearing since around 6K (brought to same service dept then but could not reproduce ... of course).

He goes on about how they heard the same thing in other e90's as well and that it is air in the lifters and was told by BMWNA to run the car hard to bleed system, blah, blah, blah.

I have followed this thread closely and am wondering what was the next step for the e90post folks took to convince the service dept. that this is crap. Overall, seems like a losing battle without spending a ton of time going back and forth.

GOD!!! . BMW manual doesn't say anything about this. BUT MY PREVIUS CAR WAS A ROVER 414 GSI. IN HIS MANUAL SAID THAT THIS TICKING, WHILE THE IGNITION STARTS THE ENGINE, IS ABSOLUTELY NORMAL, ESPECIALY IF THE ENGINE IS COLD.

Well I am lazy to explain the whole thing to you. But basically, this thread is not talking about normal ticking. If you have time, you can read it from the page one and you will know what this thread is about.

BTW, this might be a good idea for BMW that they said in manual "If your 3 series experienced any engine ticking or fuel pump failed, THIS IS ABSOLUTELY NORMAL!"

Anyone know if 5 series have any issues as many as 3 series? I am thinking to get 5 series, thanks.

my service guy said they've redesigned the head replacements a couple/few times now and that the ticking isn't damaging anything, its just annoying. He's trying to order the new head replacement for me, but says it may take a long time. Anybody heard anything similar?

Phila, i just got my car back from its 30k service. given everything they've done to my car thus far (you can search for my previous posts on this subject), they say the only next step is cylinder head replacement. however, they said BMW has not released any further information, and that i'll have to wait until October as there arent any in the country...
