Any problems with the 325i?
Anybody here have, or heard of, problems with the 325i, similar to those suffered by 320i (and 318i) owners? I'm thinking here primarily of the 'old', pre-September 2007 325i, before the Efficient Dynamics enhancements.
Tales of woe relating to the 4 cylinder engines in the 318i and 320i are legion. I wish to h5ll I hadn't bought one! If I manage to get a refund, I am considering the 325i, as a way of getting the 'cheapest' 6 cylinder engine. Is there anything I ought to be aware of? Apart from the car's raging thirst, I mean.... |

Absolutely no mechanical problems with mine at all after 18k fairly hard miles.
(I did have one issue with false brake light failure readings, but that could happen to any model) Thirst is, as you say, raging if you're coming from anything that achieves mid 30's or above, but if you go into that with your eyes open there'll be no nasties. Not sure what service intervals other 325i owners are seeing but mine occurred well before the 18k mile point it suggested when new (14k IIRC). Probably down to the hard driving, but worth asking other drivers to see what they're achieving.

Had my 325 e93 3.0 litre since March 07 and while I did have a fuel pump replaced in May 07 I have had no further failures. The only thing I do get is lumpy idle from time to time and it can be a bit hesitant when pulling away up a hill etc.
Other than that I'm quite happy with mine. Miopyk |

December 2006 - 325i and no mechanical problems at all (electronic dipstick went a bit haywire for a short time, but mysteriously managed to fix itself)

I have done 58,000 (mostly motorway) miles in my 2006 e90 325i manual. I have had the car from new and have had no mechanical problems at all. I've averaged about 30mpg since new so I personnally think it's not bad for the performance.

I've had mine now for just over 1 week. Is it normal for engine to turn over few times before starting? Sometimes it starts straight away. Other times it turns few times. A little worried. Is it normal for 6 cyl? First time to own 6 cyl and love the drive and sound of the engine!

These faults are mainly apparant in the low output 3 litre engine fitted in the 'vert though. +1 on the mpg - low 20's around town |

I had my 2005 E90 325i for over 30,000 miles and 3 years - no real issues, burned a bit of oil but only asked for a service every 16000 miles, could frequently do over 46mpg on a run, 29mpg combined. Had a much different character to the 4 cylinder variants. Great engine, great car, no regrets.

My E92 325i had a high-pressure fuel pump failure at 2,800 miles, even though it is an early ED 3.0L car, built May 07. Excessive cranking was one of the symptoms - hope this won't get Alpini worried. Car went into limp mode but remained driveable. Just as well because BMW doesn't seem to keep much replacement stock in the UK. Very pleased with fuel consumption (V-Power) - 30/31 around town, 38/41 on long motorway trips at 80mph. Not so impressed with Bridgestone runflats on 18" 189s even though they look nice. On certain motorway stretches the tramlining is quite disconcerting. Anyone had problems on southbound M40 just before Oxford services?

Nov 2006 Build 325i (2.5l engine), 17k miles from new.
Only 1 problem, water pump failed but was quickly sorted under warranty. Called BMW assist when it went into "limp home" mode they recovered the car, provided a replacement vehicle & sorted the fault within 3 days. |

Be interesting to know if yours had the software mod or not? If it has, it obviously does not work! As for the hire car, I would ring customer services and insist a car is made available at the dealer or delivered to your home. They used to use Enterprise who advertise that they will collect you and then take you the the rental office. Avis don't do this service. On a side issue, be careful with the fuel levels on the AVIS car as I had an AVIS car a month or so ago. They delived it with 'supposedly' a full tank. It was well below full so I took a pic on my phone of the gauge and mileage. I did 8 miles over two days so popped a fiver in it before they collected it. They then charged me £13.60 for having to fill the car back up to full a couple of days later. Appears that my nearest AVIS is 25 miles away, and they fill the car up when they get it back. I had to pay for their 50 mile round trip to deliver and then some. On top of the fiver I had already put in, those 8 miles cost me £18.60!!! BMW promised to refund - they never did |

New 325i owner help
Hi there. I am in the process of viewing and maybe buying a 2007 BMW 325i 2.5ltr 6 cylinder saloon. the car was registered on 03/09/2007. The car has 57k on the clock. I have checked the mileage through the online MOT results from the start of it's life and mileage looks OK. I have performed a HPI check, and all looks OK there too with no anomaly's.
I would like to know if there is anything that I should look for during the test drive and also anything that may not show up in a test drive. I want to be as sure as possible before I splash the cash. Also I'm confused as to what build the car will be, E90/91/92/93? Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thank you - Steve |

The E9x numbers are simple:
E90 is a 4 door saloon E91 is for Touring (estate) E92 is a fixed roof coupe E93 is the convertible So what you are looking at is an E90 325i. Not being funny but you are looking at a 12 year old car and despite its low mileage you have to view it as such. Bits may be showing their age rather than being worn out but these cars are no worse than any others. The main thing is to see if there is any servicing history on the car and by that I don't just mean a rubber stamp in the service book (you should just about still have a service book at that age). Are there any receipts for things like injectors, water pump or the high pressure fuel pump? Is it still running on ancient runflat tyres? This will give you an indication of how it has been looked after in the past and if there are any likely major expenses imminent. There are loads of things that won't show up in a test drive unfortunately but you can say that about any car of any age or mileage. If it has i-drive scroll through to the service info and it should tell you when service items are likely to require replacement. Try and get someone to start it from cold while you look at the exhaust. Sootiness might be a leaky injector or two and they are a fortune to replace. For peace of mind it may be worth considering purchasing a guarantee. The best one is probably BMW's own one. It is not cheap but will cover the pricey bits that are likely to fail and you will get proper BMW parts fitted as replacements. Good luck. Let us know how you get on. |
