Where do injectors leak from?

My question is simple. Where do the injectors on our n54's leak fuel from? Is it the O-Ring Seal? Do the injectors physically crack?

Thanks for anyone who can answer my question as to I'm curious and I'm trying to make more sense of it

They leak internally.....and drip out if the nozzle orfaces at the end of the injectors tip. It's not a seal you can just replace. Sucks.....but if it's leaking, you have to replace it.

Do you mean for external leaks, where you'd get fuel in the engine bay, or internal leaks where you'd get high fuel consumption and poor running etc?

I mean internal leaks. When people talk about “leaky” or “clogged” injectors. I understand clogged injectors, but just trying to grasp the physicality of leaky injectors.

Internally they leak....and when they should be closed, gas seeps by and drips out of the end of the injector.

Injector issues usually manifest themselves in a couple ways.

Usually a slight leak will be apparent with a rough start up, as excess fuel has pooled in the cylinder and takes a minute to burn off.

You can also see this in a difference between AFR's between banks under vacuum if you are logging.

Worst case scenario is consistent missfires or more rarely a hydrolock situation from an injector stuck wide open.

Clogged injectors will usually exhibit a poor spray pattern that results in missfires. Some people have had luck cleaning the affected injector with Techron and reinstalling, but thats ultimately a gamble.

Only one place they can leak from, into the cylinder, and that's the nozzle where the fuel normally comes from. Contaminant/dirt causes the pintle not to seat properly, and the injector sprays a tiny bit continuously, when there is fuel pressure, as well as spraying when it is commanded to.

I had one stuck wide open once, on my previous 335xi. It blew so much white smoke I thought it's game over, piston ring blown. Happily it was just an injector. Car ran fine after replacing it.
