I am in Romania & have a 2nd block. No pistons, crank, or head.

I'm not certain about the condition either. I'll be going to my mechanic this week & if you want I'll ask about the old block.

Otherwise, there are a few guys down here that tear these cars apart weekly. I could try to source one for you. For the record, I am American & here for work... not gonna scam you 😂

ebay and ebay kleinanzeigen, yes but you never know if they sell you a 250000Km advertising only 80000 all Turkish business...
Re manufatured engines from unknown companies (5000€) are maybe worse than stock used low mileage ones
except if you advise me on a good company?

Still haven't tear down mine, I suppose head is ok, but no idea if the crankshaft is scored, likely it is if a rod is broken....

pistons and rods I could buy forged ones from CP or carillo but cranck from BMW is 1700€, so a block alone wont help me much?

But at the end a complete engine from romania could be a solution
I am pushing low 400hp so no need for carrillo and cp internals

I will talk with my mechanic today to find out if the block is okay to re-use. I do not want to sell you something that is at all damaged. I will also talk with him about finding a 2nd hand motor from someone he trusts.

I have a long relationship with him and he has rebuilt my motor, installed my upgraded turbos etc.

You might also look in the UK for a motor. Assuming your turbos are okay (RHD turbos are clocked differently) that might be a better option. 335i are significantly cheaper there as are the parts. before I decided to do my rebuild, I almost bought a motor from a race shop up there.

Unfortunately, you're stuck between a rock & a hard place. You either spend big money on a full rebuild, or you accept the risk of buying a used motor from a stranger.

I bought a used motor that I knew had high miles and rebuilt it because I wanted to be sure I would not have any more problems. (My head was cracked)

I have about 7000 euros invested in rebuilding the car and another three thousand in upgrade parts... in addition to the actual cost of the car.

really difficult to decide, too sad to scrap the car and go for a S55 platform

engine without accessories would be ok, my turbos are still ok (40000Km on it) maybe a leaking injector to change HPFP is last type changed by BMW under warranty.

I broke the engine almost at idle just started, I think methanol pump kicked in and hydro locked the engine, strange noise then BOUM hole in the block. really don't know if crank can survive after a rod is broken

H2motors seems reputable shop they quoted me 8000 for short block including fitting to the car.. I would. Like to spend a bit lesss

The bigger problem about ebay blocks is that in case of score you can't overbore... Just a light hone is allowed on alu block

N54 has cast-iron cylinder liners.

I checked and my block is toast, so that's a no-go there. I am sure you can get a used N54 for around 2300 euros. That's how much I got mine for.

IF it needs to be bored .25 mm over, JE sells a piston kit that would fit for around 1000 eur.
From there, the head and block would need decked, bearings, maybe a crank polish.

It's doable. to break down my costs a bit more- I spent 2300 on the motor, and 4300 on the rebuild, but that includes a completely new OEM cooling system hoses, pump, radiator, as well as completely refreshing the 2nd hand block.

its certainly a bummer when these things happen, but the good news is that when it's complete, you know the car is solid. assuming you have a good builder.

The best way to find out about the crank is to have it inspected. But if you're just going to source a used motor, no reason to.

Also, IDK how much it would cost to ship one across the Atlantic, but used N54s go for $1800 in the states. I have a phone number for a shop that I bought one from in Atlanta that lasted me a couple years until I sold it.

Or you could buy a remanufactured motor with a 2-year warranty from Ghassan motors. They're pretty highly reviewed in the US Facebook N54 community. $3500 + shipping for an all but new motor.

Hey sorry, its been a busy few weeks.

I spoke with my mechanic again while I was picking up my car- he said he was sure he could source you a motor for under $3000. He said he would be unwilling to guarantee the quality of motor without taking it apart and rebuilding it himself (as was his agreement with me) Assuming you're going to have the motor rebuilt this should be a non-issue. He has trusted suppliers so the bones of the motor would be solid & it would only need to be refreshed.

I would advise you to talk to Ghassan's shop about shipping. I have no doubt he would have a better delivery plan than I could come up with.

I found a motor in the UK on a website called Gumtree.

Since I am running FBO, I don't think that any will warranty the engine, neither your mechanic.
But if he has reputable sources that can supply for 3000$ an engine with max real 150000Km that was running prior dismount, I would take it.

I have a mechanic here that can do a refresh before installing in the car.

That's a bummer about Ghassan. Yeah, being modded limits warranty offers for sure.
for $2400, I was able to buy a bare long block. No accessories at all- it seems this is what you need.

i thought you are just looking for parts to build on your own.

Of course you will pay around 8000 Euro in Germany for the whole work if parts like the block, crankshaft and/or cylinder head are damaged . Das ist Deutschland.

If you want to save money
a) do it yourself
b) go to polska
c) sell the car and look for stuff you can afford to repair if you blow it up
