I commute 100 miles every day of the week and when my e90 was my daily it would get 18-20mpg with the cruise set dead at 72 running 93. It would also do 18-20mpg with me hammering on it regularly. It would also do 18-20mpg with E60 in the tank. Did this for almost 30k miles of daily driving, racing and fun. Lots of data, car doesn't give a shit what you do with it, just drive it, itll get the mileage it gets.
Tuned or not tuned, made no difference. Best I ever did stock tune after fresh plugs and walnut blast was 22mpg with cruise set at 70 and diligent hypermiling. Best way I found to get good mpg out of these cars is to park them and buy a diesel or hybrid daily driver. I get 41mpg average now and fill up with 87. Works much better.

That was with a 40 mile each way commute, taking about an hour- moderately trafficked state route for half, some stop and go/ lights, and then the other half mostly clear 70-75mph traffic. I was a relatively economical driver but I'd honestly say not a day wen by that I didnt run boost nearly to redline at least once to blow by some idiots being idiots in nj traffic...
Most of my acceleration was done in boost at low rpm, keeping it under 3k rpms 80% of the time or more. Eventually you get tired of weaving in NJ and you just leave some space in front of you and that cancels out the ebb and flow of traffic. Hitting your brakes is wasting gas, so if you manage to drive in traffic rarely hitting your brakes or coming to a complete stop, you're actually reducing overall traffic in a small way, and using WAY less fuel than the speed up stomp brakes method. |

Yeah, no, mine is full economical, i do not live in an area with a lot of traffic. I set the cruise and dont touch the brakes until i hit my off ramp, unless i am breathing on the pedal just a hair to get around someone quicker. Thats about it. But like I said, I can do the same mpg driving it how I want, so, it really doesnt matter. And the difference in fuel cost 20 to 25mpg isnt enough for me try and find a solution. It gets driven for fun and it gets the mileage it gets.
Its a full weight xdrive, 370lb driver and auto trans. Manual rwd is going to be completely different.
