F10 M5 Shift knob + boot retrofit into E92 335i
Hey guys,
I just want to show off my newest mod. I've seen many different options for shift knobs for our cars but this definitely has to be my favorite. I really wanted it to illuminate so this was the best choice for me. Not to mention, The novillo leather that is used for this setup feels 1000x times better that the stock shift knob. Also, the knob itself is shorter and weighted for a much sportier feeling! Anyway, I've seen the M3 guys do this retrofit for there cars by just switching to boot frames in order to fit their cars because the M5 boot frame obviously doesn't fit. So, I basically had to take it a step further and tap into the light to the center console ashtray. Worked perfectly! While I know this isn't a DIY thread, I want it to be out there that people have done this, so when people search they can find this and ask me any questions they have about the install. Here's the thread I used as a guide: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=837817 BMW Part# 25112284205 My own pics: (please excuse iphone pics, light was hard to capture) Any comments, concerns, criticism, feedback welcome!

Very nice! It looks almost exactly like the weighted ZHP knob minus the illumination. That shift knob was the very first mod on my vehicle and admittedly it was amazing to see how such a little thing made such a big difference.

How does this knob compare to the ZHP?
I have the ZHP knob now, and would like an OEM illuminated knob. |

I think somebody actually weighed this knob and the ZHP knob and found they were exactly the same weight. The weighted knobs are much better than non weighted IMO. So the only differences between ZHP and this would be that the F10 M5 has attached novillo leather boot and illumination.

Can you go more in-depth in how you got our boot ring to fit and attach to the F10 boot? M3 guy just says he clips it together and never really explains, unless I didn't read far enough. |

1) Carefully separate your old stock boot from the stock boot ring. I used a heat gun to make the leather more pliable and easier to work with. I also used a razor blade to break the seal of glue. 2) Now carefully pop the staples of the F10 m5 boot ring with a small flathead screwdriver. Theres only light glue or no glue and the F10 boot will separate from the ring easily. 3) Use a hairdryer or heat gun on low and put some warmth into the new leather so its easier to work with. Carefully work it around the stock boot ring. This part takes patience but just keep working at it. Once you have about a good 1/2 inch on leather past the ring all the way around. You'll notice little tabs wanting to protrude out of the leather on the sides of the stock shift boot ring. 4) Take a sharp razor or Xacto knife and cut a slit just above the tab into the leather. Stretch the leather down so the slit opens, then tab pokes through the leather thus keeping the leather stretched and tight for you. Do that 4 times. Once for each tab. you may use heavy duty staples for the bottom or top part of the boot ring but it may not be necessary. (I didn't have to) 5) Splice into a power source and hook up the wires. Brown is ground and Gray/red is power. pretty simple. I used the light to my center console ashtray. The wires were the same colors as the shift knob so it made it really easy. If something is unclear or you have a specific question, let me know or PM me

Sorry to bump such an old thread, but can you rehost the pictures? Also did you cut on the bottom of the boot or the top part (closer to the ashtray)

Hey!
I ran the same set up on my E92 M3! I was wondering if you knew how to retrofit it onto an 335is. If I am correct, the regular 3 series do not have a connecting cable to power the light up emblems. |
