Who gets more allocation is usually the larger dealers that sell a lot of that car. But the allocation system is by model- Each model line is tracked for its own sales velocity so as I said above, the dealer that sells a lot of M’s , and doesn’t let them sit, builds his m allocation. If he sells a lot of fives and sevens, it gets him more more fives and sevens, but not other models.
It sounds like it may be unfair, but there literally is no other way to do it and be legal. Dealers can manufacture demand. I have been in court defending this system, so I know it well. Virtually every other manufacturer is the same way for their hot cars. Honda reps in the late 70s got thrown in jail for giving out cars to their best friends and dealers who screamed the loudest… That’s when things changed.

You wonder how the smaller dealers stay alive with such limited allocations in comparison.

It’s only the hot cars that are constricted, plenty of smaller dealers make good $ off 3, 5, 7 and X models which flow successfully.

If you've got to have that X5M car over the M50i, that Z06 Corvette over the standard, that GT500 over the Mustang GT, then maybe your ego doesn't mind paying additional dealer markup? I bet if they started charging a crapload of ADM on iX or 45e versions the waitlist would shrink substantially. Or maybe not? |

$500 over dealer invoice would be ideal but such are the times we're living in. I've bought many vehicles over my lifetime only a few hundred dollars over invoice allowing, of course, for all the dealer rebate and held incentives. I bought my '21 Miata last May for $1,500 off MSRP. You can't touch that deal around here now and boy am I glad I got it when I did.
I'm having to hold my nose on this smelly MSRP deal on our M50i on order - but we're doing it. The people I really feel for are young first time car buyers overpaying for used cars that are available or having to wait months for a new car at or over MSRP. It reminds me of when I bought my first home during the Jimmy Carter insane interest rates era - 11.5% on a home loan. But I survived it by buying a much less expensive home. The moral to these stories: Timing can be everything. |
