One of my bosses has a Tesla and he's pretty fed up by the lack of infrastructure. He has to drive a lot spontaneously so dependency on home charging doesn't always work. Tesla chargers often have lines and can add hours to his trips. He's often late and has to call into conferences while sitting in his car at a charging station.
I do think EVs suit the needs of your avg consumer really well. But for people who cannot depend on charging at home it can be very difficult and add a lot of anxiety. An EV can work for you 95% of the time, but that 5% of the time it doesn't can completely ruin your day. Also, EVs don't yet work for enthusiasts who value sound, shifting gears, light weight etc. However even most "enthusiasts" just think 0-60 = sports car. It's just a small contingent of us who really "get" it. We see a corner and think how we can let the car rip through it whereas the avg person gets afraid of a corner and just wants to floor it from a light. Even then, with long commutes and high gas prices, even the biggest die hards will eventually give in.

Guy I know has an e-tron. He lives in an apartment complex and he can't charge it there. So he has to spend his Saturday driving to the library to charge it there for a few hours.
"But it's OK, I just go out and get some lunch" What a waste of time. |

we had an etron for my wife and while she liked it was quiet and smooth, she was worried about battery fire and the 200 mile range was cutting it a little close, even getting home with 80 miles left still was tough since it takes a while to charge and you can't just stop for gas. you literally have to stay home until it charges back up. she went back to a gas vehicle.

I have been saying for 3 to 4 years now, the cars are not the issue, the charging is. I see fast adoption of EV's in north america but i can see a roughly 30/30/30 split with hybrids and regular ICE. EV evangelists continue to underestimate the issues related to charging.

Really depends where you live. Tesla build issues aside (this post was about EV's in general), the supercharger network where I live is big and you aren't waiting in line forever. Most people charge from home anyways, and more and more office buildings offer charging for those that commute to work. My only hesitation in getting an EV right now is my love for ICE. As soon as the manufacturers stop making that appealing (I.e. turbo fours on their high performance models), that's when I'll switch. I was so close to an Audi E-tron GT even as close to a few weeks ago but I still couldn't pull the trigger.

It's going to come. We're still in the infancy of electric vehicles and charging availability. I think the next five years are going to be pretty exciting.
There's nothing out there right now that makes me want to switch (the EV6 catches my eye, but $65k for a Kia?) |

What about the magic EV shrinking gas tank?
Range declines with battery ambient temp. The gas tank of an EV shrinks in cold weather. No bueno in my view. |

Curious on logic for Fords bankruptcy probability speculation. To avoid it during the recession and also avoiding taking the government bail out Ford put the Blue Oval as collateral. That has long been paid back. Why wouldn’t they go that route again if things were that dire.

agreed with Efthreeoh and with that being said the key (for now) is home charging. I predict in 10 years or less we won't even be having this discussion ......
