Question 320d (e93) ticking after oil change

My 320d (2008) has just had a major service including oil and filter change at Halfords and now has a ticking noise (engine speed related) that is easiest to hear between 1500-2500 revs.

The oil used was Comma which I understand to be a respectable brand.

Despite paying extra for a flush the oil looks black after driving only a few miles - is that normal?

Halfords have agreed to do it again. I'm wondering if I should insist on Castrol or on a BMW filter (and pay the extra).

Anyone been down this road and know the correct solution?

Thanks in advance,
Paul

I'd use the LL-04 spec Castrol Edge 5W-30 M given the choice, as this is recommend for diesel BMW's, but being a diesel it's not uncommon to be black again shortly after a service, the engine flush rarely flushes out much Gunk anyway.

Ensure the oil complies with LL-04 spec, and is 5w30 weight. So long as the filter is half decent (do confirm), there's not much else to go wrong. Assuming oil level is correct and they haven't done something really stupid like start it with no oil.

What else did they do as part of the service?

Good luck.
