Trying to change fuel pump, cant open ring on fuel tank

As per title. Just got new turbos installed, have a custom tune I want to put on the car and dial in. This fuel pump upgrade is the last step. I have a generic tool that i am trying to use to remove the ring on the fuel tank. It's not bad but this ring is really stuck on there, and it simply doesnt have the bite to stay locked in position. I have watched a few videos and used the search function prior to attempting this install. The tabs on the ring are getting damaged, and i dont want to damage the ring as it could make removal harder. I was whacking on it pretty good with a flat head/hammer, didnt budge a millimetre. Not sure what I should do next.. any advice appreciated... never attached a picture on forum before, hope it worked.

I would not use a screwdriver and hammer myself.

What generic tool do you have? You might want to use PB Blaster or Kroil on the lock flange first. And then use a free loaner tool from Autozone, universal fuel pump flange spanner:

Thats the exact tool i have. I used it just like I saw in videos, slipped off/ring is stuck good. I was skeptical about spraying anything around the fuel tank opening, but looks like that will be the ticket. Thanks for replying.
